Most of you when you receive your units the coil and headphones will already be paired for proper operation. I highly recommend you learn how to pair your coil and headphones, by not just reading the manual, but in fact doing it. I would also recommend you take your manual along on your first few hunts. When you get into the field, even after your first few hunts, stranger things have happened. A hunt could be ruined by you not knowing how to pair your coil or headphones. And remember electronics can do funny things at times causing your coil/headphones to require pairing, not to mention you accidentally make a change with the settings either on your headphones or remote causing the pairing action to need to be re accomplished.

That's helpful advice. I keep the pdf copy of my manual on my phone, which is always with me, but I guess that wouldn't help if for some reason my phone died.

I feel since most coils and headphones are already paired when received, folks might read about it in their manual, but never perform. And a person might also have multiple coils. I think all Deus users would benefit, say if they unpaired their coil, then turn their unit on and witness the effects, same thing with unpairing the headphones. I have had this happen to me. Would hate for example, to see a person drive a long distance, arrive at site, and have a problem preventing them from detecting and enjoying their unit.
When a pairing action would have saved the day. The more you know about your detector, the better, the way I see it.

And imagine this scenario, wonder if you had a bud with a deus like you, and you get your remotes or headphones mixed up, not knowing until later, if you know how to pair you can still hunt until the components are sorted out later.

Sharpshooter is right...
You turn on your machine and it says "No Coil"
Every thing you do doesn't seem to work....
The solution is to re-pair your coil.
Don't ask how I know....
Luckily I knew how to re-pair and all was well.

LOL, LOL

I recently got back into a new Deus and then bought a used 13" coil. I paired the remote to the larger coil and then about a week later I took it out. I use the WS4 module and adapter on a full size set of phones. Of course I immediately realized that I couldn't hear anything from the coil and I won't hook the headphones to the remote. I went back to my truck because it was cold and spent the next 30 minutes +, downloading and reading the manual and trying to figure out how to program the headphones. Took me awhile to find the page and longer to figure it out.

IMO, the Deus controls are not completely intuitive and the WS4 Module even worse. I kept keying in the serial number of the coil and waiting and then going back in and losing the information. It was confusing until I realized that I had to input the serial number into a separate saved position. Being honest, I probably couldn't do it again right now, or at least do it correctly the first time again. What is awesome is once you have the coil programmed into the module, when you select back and forth in the remote it will automatically select the correct coil into the WS4 and there isn't a need to go into the WS4 module and select the new coil manually.

Pairing the coil is pretty straight forward, the headphones a little trickier. Pointman, your experience mirrors mine almost to a tee, except I had my manual with me luckily.

Thanks for the heads up. Mine should be arriving any day now, I'll make sure I learn how to synch everything up.

Also may make sense, to have the serial number of the coil written somewhere else. Sometimes its covered, sometimes even damaged due to wear or unprofessional cleaning.
Best greetings from Germany

i had that problem a few times while switching coils after they were paired. i also found that if i have the S4 on it will automatically find which coil is being used.
i didn't know there was a downloadable manual. is it on the XP site?

found it!! thanks for the heads up. that is great to have the manual with you on the phone whenever it is needed.

Great info Bart
