I am going to do some river hurting in July. I though about getting me a set of chest waders, but if my item is deep, well that won't work. So what do you guys wear when you go river hunting? I want to stay away from shorts for obvious reasons. I want to stay covered up.

Use a wetsuite you will float easy and go as deep as you want.

North Carolina in July? I personally wouldn't worry about staying dry given the heat at that time of year. But, I would either be in just a pair of long pants and some old boots or a bib type wet suit with wading boots or again, old work boots. If you're always looking to stay dry (which I don't think you are..?), then you'll regret not being able to get at the stuff just out of reach. Good luck!

Watch Aquachigger on youtube, your welcome

Well I am heading a bit deeper south for this hunt, and I think a wet suit would be way to hot.

Toecutter, I watch the chigg constantly and I have noticed what he wears is based on what type of water he is in.

Bodkin, I was going for the dry, but that would limit me to shallow areas and on the banks.

I guess a better way to ask my question is, material. I know cotton is out of the question, what material would be best.

even rivers down south can be cool in the summer
they make all different thicknesses of wet suits
i suggest a 2 piece farmer john - you wear both when colder and choose the upper or lower for when it is warmer
lower or underneath suit is called a farmer john - long legs but just straps up top - usually wear a sweat shirt under mine with bathing shorts and get some good wet boots
you could probably get away with a 3mm one - i use 5mm and 7mm in winter months up here
these are just ideas for you to show you what to look for

you can buy just a farmer john to see if you like it 9save some money and add the other piece after if you need more
i mostly wear the farmer john cause mine have padded knees and its great with rocky bottoms most times other than winter
i will just throw a dive jacket on top - you stay in any cool water for a length of time and it will lower your body
temp - you can get hypothermia even when it is warm out - its not fun

under $129 is good for a 2 piece - you can get farmer john for like $59 if you look around

I’d go with jeans and boots or a water shoe

How about Gortex as a material?

Supposed to be a nice intermediate in between hot and cold temps. Not sure if it works as well in the water.

Casper I was on to the same thing. I found what Amazon calls Kayak pants, basically a 1/2 wet suit. Just the bottoms.

Wetsuit or spring suit if its cold water, just a bathing suit when its hot. Old sneakers or surf booties n gloves. Protect your hands and feet. Snorkel is great n sometimes some weight.

I just went river hunting a couple weeks ago and wore a pair of blue jeans, T-shirt and diver's shoes. The deepest water was only about 4 feet. I also wore a pair of rubber palmed gloves. The diver's shoes help with the slippery rocks and the gloves protect your hands from sharp rocks and other stuff. I also take a mask and snorkel. It makes looking underwater much easier.

I will have a snorkel for sure, and I already have some gloves. I am just leaning wet suit because cold water and....parts don't get along.

I think one wet suit for cold water/weather and a wet suit for warm/hot water/weather is the best route to go with and a shoe or boot that will allow you to snorkel or walk the stream/river bed. You definitely don't want waders that could pull you under if you step into a deep hole. Also, if you have sink holes in the rivers there like we do in East Tennessee, you might want to rope yourself off or tie a 2" x 8" x 10' to your' butt!:dontknow::icon_scratch::laughing7::tongue3:

The water down here in south Georgia in the Flint river was warm! Almost like taking a bath! But, it was 100 degrees out so that had something to do with it.

Please don't wear waders. I stepped into a deep spot by mistake last year or the year before - the current was stronger there in that mucky water - couldn't see the bottom. I had to use my scoop and tip toes to get in shallower water - tough to do in the current, gave me a real thrill. If I'd been wearing waders I'd have drowned.

Edit: Also get yourself a flotation vest - I picked one up after that experience.

Fyrffytr1, I will be in GA huting in July. So I figure I would go with quick dry hiking pants, boots and a swim shirt.

I had no Idea there was such a thing as a hot weather wet suit. I will be getting me one for the cold water we have up here. There are many a swimming hole up here.

Hard bottomed water shoes, or lightweight tight sneakers. DO NOT wear thin rubber bottomed aqua shoes! They make walking rock bottoms a nightmare!! And- you’ll sweat to death in waders. Jump in and have fun!

For hot weather and water you can't go wrong with a wash and wear suit. You can get them in a variety of styles to suit your taste. It will dry quickly allowing you to go from stream to dinner with no need to change. It's versatile.
