I'd like to keep this at the top as long as possible to inform visitors and new members.

I know it's a long standing and recurring problem, but I just want to say it.

If you buy coins from one location, do not bring them back to that location. Even if they say it's OK; even if you think it's OK. It will hurt you and others in the long run. Open an account at another bank is best, another branch of the same bank if you must.

Why?

1) You might frustrate someone and they won't order for you again.
2) Management might notice your frequent appearance and stop coin sales to you.
3) You might fill or break the machine, causing a branch doing YOU a favor to do extra work.
4) You will end up searching through your own dumps at some point. At least search OTHER people's dumps!

A few reminders from the past few weeks.

1) I saw a guy dumping dimes and halves at a bank, and then buy a box. AND tell them he was looking for silver (don't teach the people that handle the money how to go through it if they don't know!) I talked to him and he seemed to have no idea why that might not be a good plan, at least from the frustrating tellers perspective.

2) A bank I picked up some halves from today only sold them to me when I agreed not to bring them back. Of course I never do, I've been buying there over a year, and never brought them back. They said others have, and clog up their machine and it is out of order. Just imagine: if you helped someone out, and they came back and made more work for you and problems at your workplace? Would you want to do that again?

So please. Do not take them back to where you picked them up.

The only time I sell coins to a pickup bank is when I give them two quarters for the odd roll of pennies they have. I have yet to receive a complaint.

Second, my dump bank is the bank that holds all my accounts and receives my direct deposited pay checks. They have a two bin coinstar machine in the lobby which is the fastest counter I have come across. Besides, why would they complain about me dumping my coins when I pay them thousand of dollars a year interest on my mortgage and loan. Make them do a little work for the money I say.

dawg, i've been say'n this since the start of time.

Dang 50 thought you went the way of Em and Notorious-good to see you pop back in

??? Accordselux was saying don't dump at your pickup bank or other branches of your pickup bank. Is your dump bank your pickup bank? I couldn't tell from your post.

No, Chief. My dump is the credit union which holds all my accounts and loans. My pick up is a regular bank. Hope that clears it up.

I agree. Don't mess your house. I know we'll inevitably end up stepping on toes here or there, but just some basic courtesy and critical thinking can make this work.

Dumping where you pick up is like leaving your car on in a garage that's connected to your house. sure, it probably won't hurt if you do it one time and realize it was a mistake. But sooner or later, if you're careless, you'll leave the car on, and you will die from co2 asphyxiation.

Dump once, and realize your mistake, sure. Keep dumping where you pickup and you'll kill the relationship with the bank.

CO2....close enough :)

Seems like a lot of new members lately... Thought it would be a great time to bump this thread. HH!

yes... DO NOT DUMP WHERE YOU PICK UP!!! This should be a sticky...

Well, yeah. I mean, it can be a sticky business. :tongue3:

When inquiring of banks in the past before opening an account I've made a point of asking about buying coin, and have always been told sure, so long as I didn't bring them back. None of the dozen + banks around here take loose coin, none have coin machines.

I've been collecting coins since I was a kid, but not much roll hunting until now. My bank doesn't seem to mind either the boxes (and has offered to order me all I want, at the moment) and were the ones that told me they had a coin counter in the first place. They didn't seem like they had really had anyone doing this before and were very curious on why. When I explained I collect coins and had some small children interested who were just learning about money they actually thought it was really neat...go figure.

After reading through all this and thinking about it, it definitely makes a lot of sense. The last thing I want to do is get the enthusiastic tellers (or their supervisors) upset with what I am doing...I want to keep them excited for me! (Perhaps as I continue to build the relationship I can have them looking for items and none of them seemed to have any clue...I as actually asked if you can find "valuable" coins". I have sense found a bank that as a self-serve coin counter and charges nothing for account holders - $50 minimum and no fees. The best part is they are 5 minutes from work and on my way home...opening an account tonight for my dump bank.

Anyway, I guess my simple point is - thanks for the opinion and analysis on why it's a good idea.

I pickup where I dump, have had no problems, going on 3-years as CRH. I currently have five banks. The only one bank I don't dump is the one that sells me their bags off the coin counting machine. Stands to reason on this one, as a "Don't dump where you pick up".

A guy in front of me yesterday dumped out a carton full of pennies (43 bucks, I'm assuming it's a copper hoarder) and then asked for a box of pennies. Not the first time I've seen someone dump and buy in the same transaction.

I dump boxes in many different banks, the reason for this is to not overwhelm banks by coming back and dumping boxes practically every minute. Earlier in the year I had two or three dump banks and one of the tellers at one bank said these words,
"I'm sorry but we all ready have around 20 of your boxes, It takes us a while to sell all of these boxes so I would perfer iif you stop bringing us all of your boxes." That did not affect my coin roll hunting much, for I had other back-up banks but at that time I was mainly bringing coins to that bank. I have never brought back a box to a bank that I get coins from and now carefully distribute. I have many banks within 3 miles from me so I may bring one to one bank one day and one the next. Also, The bank which got upset for me bring all those boxes now is fine with me there, like I said, I was not banned from that bank, they just said not to bring boxes until they can get rid of all of my boxes.

Another thing I do is ask the banks if they have some of the "older" dimes, quarters or Halves that have the silver colored edge instead of the modern copper edge in which newer dimes have. That does not tell them that they are silver, though a lot of tellers already know. For instance I have many tellers who keep their eye out for them, most of these tellers know. I have had one teller save me a silver on more than one occasion, the teller even said that they saved a 90% silver dime for me.

Just my Thoughts,
Coinman123,

I've actually had a bank recently tell me I can bring back the cents I search and trade for more. This actually makes sense and they will probably become a dump bank when the local counter is down. Most banks have to order alot of cent boxes for their retail clientele. They are more likely to take them so as not to have to order them. Halves are a different matter. They would have to send them back.
