Attacked by bumblebees!

Ground bees are the worst. I disturbed a nest once while mowing. Then, on my next pass, walked into a swarm of them. Stung twice , really hurt. Wished I had a flame thrower.
yes the ground bees are bad ...They live in a hole in the ground.... And they will chase you down right to you house .... when you get in the house they will be on the outside of your door trying to get in .. And if they caught up to you before you got in the house......They will be down in your shirt and in your pants ....... That is the yellow jackets..........

Twenty years ago in the woods and moved a dead log. I was swarmed by yellow jackets before I could say Run Forrest Run!! Got stung all over my upper body and under my eye.

I paint houses for a living,One thing i'll say is I dread taking window shutters down.Usually yellow jackets galore if the house hasnt been looked after for a while. It gets worse?Try disturbing a nest on the top of a 30' ladder.:laughing7:

Yellow Jackets ie wasps are the worst!

Nuh uh. I disturbed a white faced hornet nest while on a roof cleaning the eaves and ended up running off the roof.

It was worth it. They're about 4X larger than yellow jackets and were biting and hanging on with their jaws while stinging repeatedly with their tail stingers. Bad news.

Yup I had to deal with those too.Luckily it wasnt on a roof or a ladder.

There is a thing used to be called "sting kill swab". Packets of 5 or 10. They are slightly larger than a filter on a cigarette and contain 1cc of liquid. The outside shell is plastic and you squeeze it to crush a very thin glass containing the liquid. This then flows to a cotton swab applicator.
They are VERY effective. You can see the swelling go down right after applying. They also make little packets of wipes. The swabs work better.

Do you know what it contains? Can you buy it on-line?
Thx

When I was a kid about 9 or 10 a couple of friends and I were out in the back fields behind our house. I climbed over a fence onto a rotten log that had a yellow jackets nest in it. I was completely swarmed and ran like he!!. I ended up with over 70 stings, 20 of which were on my scalp and face.
If my one friend how was there jumped over he would of died as just one bee sting could be fatal.

I hate those ground hornets!!! Cutting grass one day, as I got close to the flow well I stopped to turn the water on to add fresh water to the tub of water. Made several rounds then back to the well to turn the water off. I have mondo grass planted around the whole area, the vibration from the mower stirred them up, I didn't realize what it was that hit me in the back of the head. When I turned around the whole swarm was after me. I had to jump off & run...yep, they chased me all the way across the drive way to the front of the house (door locked), I scrammed to the back porch to the kitchen door with them still chasing me. I was stung 14 time on the neck & head. Those stings really, really hurt.

Then there was the time years ago, my husband was bush hogging the pasture & stirred up a nest in the ground, the tractor could not go fast enough to get away, he killed the engine & ran & jumped in the pond. Long as he stayed underwater, he was ok but each time he managed to look up they kept swarming over his head.

Last year in the woods with the backhoe digging stumps, stirred up another nest. Put the backhoe in reverse & started backing up as fast as it would go. Killed the engine, & took off running, then laid on the ground on his stomach to play dead. They swarmed but did not bite.

I'll tell y'all later about my son & the hornets.

Oh! Riverat. ..Great story..I know not funny at the time, but had a good laugh! lol!

Bumble bees make their nest in the ground...or inside something like an old crock pot turned upside down. We had a nest of them in our smoke house on the farm. They had come up through the floor and made a nest inside a crock pot that was upside down on the floor. Funniest thing I ever remember is my step-dad and my younger brother going into the smokehouse to get rid of the bumble bees. Both of them came running out with bumble bees on the attack. I was inside the house watching from a window. I knew better than to go on that venture!!!! They are the big black and yellow bumble bee. There are other bumble bees called the "carpenter" bumble bee. They burrow a home in wood....and usually they never sting. I'm sure there are more varieties of them.....google has that answer.
Question ? Do "bumblebees" mean different things in different areas ?

around here bumblebees are the fat Bees that spend most of their time
on Dandelions, some of which get so fat & loaded down,
they end up walking home instead of Flying
(usually at Dusk, I would see one overloaded & walking home), & the only way I have ever been stung
by Bumble bees have been by stepping on them in bare feet as a kid.
I was always under the impression they would not chase a person even if their queen depended on it. if they have a queen.
No idea what their nest is like, can't say I ever saw a bumblebee nest, Will Google that next :tongue3:
