AT PRO in freshwater lake

I have had my AT Pro for over two weeks now, I am having a lot of false signals in the water. I get a good tone, rescan and the tone and signal is gone. These false signals I get every couple of steps, makes my search time in the water very long and frustrating. It works great on land just problems with the water. I have tried all different combinations of modes and settings, ground balance at different water levels and still have problems. I have found coins and jewelry in the water, but I am constantly checking every signal, my settings for water use are

standard mode-zero
discrimination 35
sensitivity two segments short of maximum

I will mention that when I go through the up and down motion to ground balance on land it makes the usual noise and then quiets down, but when I go through the up and down motion to ground balance in the water the noise never goes quiet like land ground balance. Just the process of ground balancing in water is noisy, after I have it set is quiet and no chirping or noise just lots of false signals.
I am curious if other users for freshwater hunting have this problem or is it just my unit??

How many machines you swung?. How many years you been tectin?. Atpro is tough for a first machine for beginners. Okay, fresh water, set pro mode, custom, zero notch, gb at full sense, iron scrim at zero. Goldigger? Okay, dig all mid tone targets. Avoid high pitch, unless you are looking for coins. ABSOLUTELY STAY OUT OF STD MODE, IT SUCKS. Understand?

Use same settings indicated in above post for land too. Good luck. It's so simple, a cave man can do it. No, I am not being facetious.

I have been detecting for over five years with a detector Pro wader, I know it does not have all the extra features and settings the AR PRO has but I have searched numerous freshwater lakes with no problem. I feel quite comfortable with the settings and the performance of the AT PRO on land, I use the pro- zero mode with iron audio, 35 on discrimination. I have increased my dollar amounts and found other interesting items also, the reason I use the standard settings in the water is because I thought it would quiet down some of the false signals, but this was not the case.I have played around with all setting and mode combinations, I have ground balance numerous times in the water but I still have problems with the false signals. I have found rings and coins in the water with the AT PRO but my search times have been extremely slowed down by having to rescan these false signals that do not ring up again. I am getting good tones and numbers with these false signals, that is why I have to stop and check them out. I have researched and watched numerous videos on the AT PRO operation, when I go through the pumping motion of ground balancing in the water it never quiets down like on land. I am hoping that Garrett service finds a problem that is fixable, the main reason I purchased the AT PRO was for water hunting.

My atpro seems good and stable in the iron but I dont see much less "falsing" with this machine. Most machines false on iron, because iron will burst thru high pitch even with max scrim. Same with the pro. Do this. Set pro mode, notch in every thing. Go zero in the iron scrim too. Use a sensible sense, heck start out at three bars. Get a decent gb in metal free ground. Do not use iron audio, yet. Do all this in a good lawn somewhere, like a friends, or relatives. After all this, use your ears and brain, not the screen. The pro cannot false with these settings. Dig all the wonderful stuff that beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beeep beeep beeep beep beep beep beeep beeep beeeb beeps, in all directions, mid and high tone. But be prepared to hear all the low tone squabble that the iron will give you. But that's okay, you hear iron rumblings, you hear goodies too. It's the best way to go, multi tone, no scrim. Low tone for iron, Mid for gold and foil, High for copper and silver. Do it.

Dont forget, no matter what you do, avoid std mode. It is not good. It is so bad, that they should get rid of it. They should offer the same machine, same design, pro mode only, with three custom settings that are retained in memory, and have three touch pads to instantly go to any of these modes, instantly, at will, no flipping, get rid of the waterproof, put a backlight on it, keep the same screen layout, re-design the big coils to cut some weight, do a complete ergo study for the best balance, and sell for $499US. It would be a super duper upper upper lower end metal detector from hell.

Also when you are hunting in mineralized ground and you are keeping the coil up a few inches, you have to remember to keep the coil at an even distance above the ground otherwise it will false when you lift it.

Always sweep the coil as close as physically possible to the ground. Mineralized ground can be gb'd out, especially when using auto gb on the pro. Once you are gb'd, go right ahead and sweep that coil low, right to the ground. It will not false when you lift it, unless it is a bad unit of course. If you are falsing from lifting, you are sol.

Have you tried reducing sensitivity more? Try another 2 notches off and see if it makes a differance.

I sent the AT PRO back to Garrett for repair, talked to them last week and they replaced the mainboard and according to Fed EX I should be receiving my detector today!.

I just finished a couple days testing my detector in the water and it works great, no more false signals. Looks like I am good to go for land and water!Garrett replaced the main board and so far no problems.

Glad its running stable...your going to love it and make great finds....good luck.
