Read the posts by John Edmonton. He spends a lot of time with the AT Gold and offers some GREAT information. You're going to get false readings. The VDI is neat but is not to be depended on. I have an AT Pro on the way and i'm very excited to hit the pavement with it. I've read all over the Net and I've found the information on this forum to be the best and most condensed, especially Johns posts.

As far as trash goes; even the best of best detectors will have you digging it up, get used to it, it's part of the hobby.

Most machines will read a tin can as a good signal. When it is a tin can, usually it's a very strong signal. To get an idea of it's size, keep swinging the coil back & forth over the target while slowly raising it. If you get to 8-10 inches, it's probably a junk target. The AT Gold will have the iron audio, which will notify you of it's iron if it's in fact a tin can.

The amount of iron discrimination is going to depend on the site you are working, how much and what kind of trash, and what you are searching for. I suppose it depends on your mood, too. If you are not concerned about the small gold, go ahead and run it all the up at 44. This will lose most foil except the wadded up tight stuff or really thick. But you will lose some gold. Usually I run no higher than 40 and sometimes in the high twenties or for prospecting even lower. Be sure to watch the Garrett videos at their website.

I am still learning my ATG. You think you are picking up every nail now just wait. I have been told by a few that the ATG is VERY sensitive and so far I believe it. John Edmonton has some good advice along with many others. Also read the manual and watch the videos more than once. Once is just not enough.

the 350 wiggle will tell most the time if its junk . wiggle the coil and pull away, it will bonk if its trash

The 5x8 Coil on the Gold is OUTSTANDING!

I'm getting my ATG in a couple weeks. I'm new to hobby and VERY excited as most people are for new tools. I'm sure i'll be asking q's. The main thing I've learned is practice makes perfect, and that it's the detectorist that makes the tool work right. Can't wait to see what I can do with my ATG as well as find. Junk or not. I feel like this hobby benefits the environment by helping clean up the junk. I believe that "leave no trace" is a good motto. Come on Xmas!

Ahhh JBreaker. I'm jealous. Mines 2 weeks out. All I get to do now is think of my areas I want to hit. Unfortunately I need a 4x4 or at least a truck and my boat to get to this spot where I picked up some gold dust years ago. I'm dying to get in there. Hoping for beginners luck and get some nuggets. Lol

Well I got my 4x4 truck now and metal detector is put together. So now I'm heading to payson and do some minor exploring.

Remember when prospecting some of the deep nuggets may not give a good target ID. That means some weak targets need to be checked out. Usually dig down a few inches then check again. Always use a small test nugget buried so you can see what the ground is like. Don't skip this test.

Great post!

Hey Signal. Thx for that suggestion. I'll definitely keep that in mind when I go. The soils where I'm testing my detector isn't exactly the same as where I'm hunting at. So that's a great idea, so I can tune it up for that.
