Hi everyone, newbie here :-)
I was going through some of my things that were given to me by my late grandmother. I came across the attached photo id/locket that belonged to my great grandfather who was born in the 1890's.
I was wondering if anyone could tell me what this is actually called & what it would have been used for & where it may have originated from. My g grandfather served in WW1, i contacted the Australian war museum & asked them if it was a standard issue item & they said no.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Kind regards

Hello from New England/ Ct/ USA, it seems to be a lockect I.D. ... Since it was not standard issue i.e. chapter tags aka dog tags. But it also could be used as a form of ID. In the intel field, if your were to gain access to a Command post or even a runner. And or a brother with a picture locket as a simple gift. Cheers!

I would need a closer look, but it looks 'trench art' to me. I think it's handmade from brass cases. This would make it more special, as it's likely your Grandad made it during WWI.

Welcome to Treasure Net !!
Two thoughts: (1) Check out the back side of the pic to see if there is anything written; and (2) Check out your grandfather's service record to see if he was even in an outfit beginning with the numbers 44. I can tell you there was an Australian 44th Battalion that did serve during WW I. If you find a connection to the 44th, you might use this site for additional research:

It is an early 20th C wrist locket.

Matt, It does resemble the wrist locket, But I'm with Cru on the fact that the first thing that hit me was Trench Art, He might have made his own.....

Yeppers, it's a wrist locket, but I'm not sure about the engraving. I've enlarged so you can see the uniformity of the lettering marks. Very interesting, Breezie
