Asian Bell

Hey Guys and Girls,

I found this old bell in my mum's old backyard, I doubt its worth anything however I am curious to know if anyone can share any info on it.

I cleaned it up using some electrolysis, so I'll attach both photos.

Well, we lost the pics upon the implotion. Maybe you can repost for others' enjoyment. Back to the train of thought we were in...

With no clapper, it couldn't be a bell. I'm thinking candle snuffer. Ceremonial, like in a Catholic church. Someone cared enough about it to repair it at some point in time. I'm assuming it's brass. Is it heavy? Thick? Look like it could have once swung from a long pole with a hook on the end? -Noodle

I dont think its a beel either...only because the inside showed that what ever was attached...was way off centered....wouldnt abell clapper be centered....I think its actually a Samurai helmet

Well, its not a helmet first of all, its made of copper as it has a gold look to it, not a bronze one. Its kinda heavy and it is kinda thick.
I can't see where a donga would be attached inside, so maybe it was made just to look good??

I'm thinking candle snuffer. Ceremonial, like in a Catholic church.

Maybe, however the candles would have to be pretty big.

On closer inspection the underside of the handle is warn.

I was just kidding about the helmet.

After looking around , I see that the clapper could be attached of center for tonal purposes. Or in some cases it didnt even have a clapper...it was struck with a long stick.
Its a temple bell....Chinese perhaps........But I am thinking you probally shouldnt have cleaned it

I feel its definately a bell, meant to be struck rather than having a swinging clapper inside. Recently ended ebay item 7374540550 is pretty nearly identical, but I think someone added the clapper.

I Don't know what the Bell was for, but it is still pretty Neat. trk5capt...

That's a great ebay lead, I'm going from that searching the whole of the net.

Its a shame the people added the clapper to the ebay bell, and I'm surprised it only fetched 12 bucks.

As for cleaning it, I know it may have lost its value for a collector, but being a collector myself now, personally it makes me feel better knowing its clean and looks like the way it was intended to look.

Some sort of bell for sure, Maybe just ornamental , But still nice, HH Art,,,,
