Could this be a piece of a late 1700s Artois shoe buckle? I found this next to an old cemetery in the middle of the woods with tombstones going back to early 1800s. The piece is lightly ornate on the front. It seems to be curved like the Artois shoe buckles but the top piece got bent inward it looks like. Maybe the poor colonial got his shoe run over by something. It also has the hole in the middle where the actual buckle clasp would have gone ... is what I'm thinking anyway.
