the shell was exploded due to the risk.

the column talks about how civil war and relic hunters lamented that the shell be defused and saved for historical reasons.

This shell very well may have come from one of Porter Alexander's (Georgia) guns. One Loud Rebel Yell! I'd be willing to bet that this shell was "Whistling Dixie" when fired at Little Round Top.
