Primary Interest:
Metal Detecting
I was detecting in a wooded area here in CT. It was near an ancient main route and I was checking an area that sloped down to a stream. I had found a 2 cent piece and a fatty Indian, then I got a decent signal with no depth showing. I assumed it was a piece of slaw or junk so I just pushed the leaved over with my foot. I saw a brownish piece of metal and bent over to check it out. As I bent over I could see details on it - suddenly it came into focus and I could see the cannon and cannon balls! The thing was sitting right on the surface under the leaves!! It's only a fragment but I'm STOKED!! I carefully scanned the area and about a foot away I found 3 smaller fragments that were down about an inch or so. I'm definately going back with a smaller coil to recheck. (the coins I had found were shallow also).
I need the experts out there to help me with any details: vintage, type, etc. I know it's US but exactly what period? (Rev, 1812?). I can see the foot of an eagle on the cannon barrel. The breaks are old - they didn't happen from me. Someone might have stepped on it in the past.
Thanks for any info. Bruce Ct

Believe that's probably an 1812 Shako plate. Shame it's broken, but fairly typical when dug.
