After about 3 hours and 3 locations this is all I came up with today.

Dug it at a spot where I pulled a NYPD button dated around 1898 and a 1859 Indian Cent a few years ago. There was a house there on a map dated 1877. You can't tell in the picture but I pointed where a regiment number was probably attached. The only useful info I found about them so far is here. http://www.cdsg.org/reprint PDFs/CACInsignia1.pdf

If anyone else out there has some info I'd be happy to hear it.

Not the trunions, I should have specified that, sorry. You can't see it in the picture, but just below the trunions, is where a thin piece of metal has broken off.

The back of the pin is hollow. I will post the back in a few minutes.

Looks like you researched your find well. It clearly is the 1904 Coastal Arty Pin. I found two cards of these, (new old stock), in an antique store in North Carolina. Along with them was two cards of the same type but 10th Buffalo Soldier Regiment with Crossed Rifles. I bought them for 7 bucks each!

Great find!

You're right DaChief, it is the Coastal Artillery pin. If I had just gone a little deeper on the main site http://www.cdsg.org/ They give all kinds of great info. That was one of the easiest "research finds" I ever came across.

My guess is it's from someone stationed at either Sandy Hook or one of the NY batteries. I really wish I had the number with it. I may have to go back and search that little area where I popped it from.

Come to think of it, I did throw out a small piece of junk that could have been the number 0 or the letter "O", I better go jump in the can and see if I can find it!
