Hi all!

So I found this Thing on Myrtle Beach, SC (East Coast, US) after a major hurricane. It is 2.25 inches (5.5 cm) in length, 1.75 (4 cm) inches in width. It is shaped like a rodent's head, with Asian-style 'eyes' and large 'ears'. There are three incongruous indentions where a 'mouth' and 'nose' should be (could be random pocks). Between the 'ears', the stone is polished nearly smooth, as though it has been rubbed back and forth with a coarse rope for many years. There is also a very slightly raised ridge between the 'ears', in nearly a straight line (I think that should upload as the third pic).

Any guesses? I've been wondering for thirty years.

Thanks for looking!:hello:

Instead of a rodents head, I can see a snake head, and what kook like eyes on top. It could have been worn or carried as a fetish or spirit charm. HH

I took the liberty of removing the 'solved'. I hope you don't mind if I seek out a few more opinions, Bigfoot. I can't find any other pic matching the terms "lizard skull cap" on the internet, and based upon the pic you posted, I don't see much of a match there. Thanks for comments!

It's been interesting, posting it here and elsewhere. It definitely captures the imagination.

sorry for delay...skull cap is a term I have heard from my paleontologist, beer buddy and I applied it.he has shown me several and that is where I got the idea.I am no paleontologist, but it looks reptillian to me,a skull.there are virtually thousands of specie possibilities so I posted one that was generically similar.I am still confident that is what it is,but would certainly defer to an expert in the field.Just trying to help.hh

also...by typing in skull cap you may find this image.below is website where it came from, interestingly enough....they refer to it as a skull cap.so I guess I wasnt kidding..hh

also I am told that to become black and fossilised it takes millions of years...even dirt filling cavities can become part of the fossil.again I defer to an expert of course but memory tells me this is called leeching.

I've been to the Museun of Natural History in NY and that Pachycepahlosaurus skull is about two feet from end to end.

I read every post so far and all I can say is yall have been using your imagination to think its a face or skull . Im not so sure its just an odd shaped worn rock. But its possible to be an artifact but not a face or skull IMO.

again...was just trying to help.never said I was a paleontologist...heck...its not even mentioned in my name....:icon_thumright:...My area of education is extraction geology and my best guess is that the item in question is biological in nature and not geologic...again best guess as I have no avenue to test it etc..hh

also...I believe I posed my original response as a question...not an answer.I would hate to think offering ones personal impression would be questioned as less than valuable...simply opens new avenues of research for op.

that was my intention...no more.all good...:icon_thumright:

OK seriously its hard to tell by a pic. Paleo, is is heavy and hard like granite? Could it be the remains of a broken fishing weight worn from the ocean?
