20121221_041839 - Copy (2).jpgI may have to resort to loading pics in multiple posts 'til I figure this site out! Anyway, I'm looking for assistance with identifying these two artifacts which were found in southern Washington state. Any and all info would be appreciated! Thanks!!

You say they were found in Southern Washington, was that near the Columbia River? The willow leaf is an outstanding point. From the size of your fingers in the photo, comparing that with the point, I wouldn't call it "massive." It could well be a knife and it also could be a dart point, that's why they are called "bi-faces," meaning they are worked on both sides but we can't prove what they were used for. I'm not a bit familiar with Columbia River points, except there are some really beautiful points called Columbia River Gem points, and from the looks of your willow leaf, you are coming pretty close to having one. Not only did the native people govern their lives with religion and superstitions, I think they also appreciated beauty and enjoyed nice things just like we do now. So there would be lots of reasons a point was made from a certain stone, and I don't deny that ceremonial is one, but just enjoying the beauty could be another. People from all cultures who couldn't afford art for arts sake, made do with functional art, the things they used every day being objects of beauty. We just don't know for sure what the artifact was used for, but we can make educated guesses, and enjoy the beauty of the object. The second point is typical of points from the Columbia River down to northern California. Lots of points were made of stone other than obsidian, and the serrations on some of the points are what I'm speaking of, calling that typical. Not all points in this area have those serrations, but there's a lot that do, and I'm calling that unique to this area, I don't see that in artificats from a lot of other places. Anyhow, welcome to T Net, and I hope you got a little from this, because I'm not an expert on this subject.

BosnMate, Thank you for ALL of that information...you have a lot of knowledge and sharing it is what makes this site so special!!

Welcome to the site and very nice finds. The first point is very nice. The 2nd may be a Rabbit Island, but I really don't know much about WA points, though it's my home state.
