Relic Hunting
I've got countless fragments of artifacts I've saved over the past 50+ years of hunting. I want to try and illustrate what to look for when assessing your finds. These are only a few of the more interesting ones (IMO) I've kept. The first pic is of some point fragments. The 2nd thru 5th pics are of a small, grit tempered pottery vessel (about 1/5th of it in my estimation). I hope this helps some of our newer collectors when they're sizing up their finds. Thanks in advance for looking.

Edit: I'd also like to add a pottery "Foot" in the last 3 pics. Probably 1 of 3 or 1 of 4 on the vessel it was a part of!

Great post. I often wonder when finding a fragment - what would this have looked like when it was whole.

A question for everyone - in your experience/area how many fragments to whole points do you find? I like to say for every 30 flint flakes, I find a fragment and for every 20 fragments, I find a whole point (or at least 90% whole).

Thanks for responding GE! I'd say that's the first thing that crosses most of the seasoned hunter's minds. You know what you're looking for and can size up what you're seeing quickly. I'm not sure, even now, that I have ever found a sho-nuff G10+! So to answer your question, 1 in 10,000! :laughing7: But with a little more sincerity, I'd say 1 out of 20 in the places I surface hunt.

I had a guy just give me a shoebox full of frags I’ve had fun sorting them out and trying to id them.

These are just the bases I’ve got bags of retouched flakes, scrapers, axe fragments, knives, cores. It’s amazing how much it helps to grow in knowledge handling what some consider trash.

I've thought about a frame of my best frags or brokes.

Beat 'cha to it! So did the "Dirt Daubers". I've got to get that nest out of the 2nd one.

Hammered aluminum ware was popular back in the '60s. Mama would put a paper towel on this plate and either serve fried chicken or salmon croquettes on it. We had a pitcher that we put tea in too. Instant tea sweetened with saccharine if you wanna call that tea. Cut our milk with the powdered stuff to save money. Talk about starting a post way off on a tangent, an unappetizing one at that. Anyway, I put some of my broke stuff on the plate and keep it on my desk.

That reminds me of Caramel and Fudge candies! I just sent my wife, Donna, to the store to get some Butter Pecan Ice Cream, Oreo cookies and a Mr. Goodbar. No telling what she'll get for herself! :laughing7:
