Hello, found in the Scottish borders in ploughed field near a fort. this land has been detected for years, I only started detecting 6months ago hoping there is still some good stuff to be found 🙏🏻Welcome to the site....
Can you give us some more info to go on?
Where were they found (roughly)? Any particular reason you believe they are horse related?
Top Pic looks like the back of a two piece button with missing shank......second Pic looks like the square head from a roofing simplex nail for nailing felt paper down. Are you sure they are lead.....
Welcome Reiver. I'm a little down the road from you in Lancashire.Hello, found in the Scottish borders in ploughed field near a fort. this land has been detected for years, I only started detecting 6months ago hoping there is still some good stuff to be found 🙏🏻
Hello, yes I love finding buttons I've found many including military, Also some bullets badge caps etc. coinage found few Victoria's and George's. No silver/ gold yet..they could be long gone 😢Welcome Reiver. I'm a little down the road from you in Lancashire.
I too am currently focusing on land adjacent to a Roman fort that has been hunted over the decades but is still producing. It's also infested with buttons from all ages. Yesterday I found what could be the oldest button yet (no I'm not an avid collector but this one was a decent find for a button. Yt's medieval and lead and not unlike your first pic really. Not being an expert on these things but having found countless of them making them from lead doesn't seem to have been a thing in once into the 18th century so im hazardong a guess they are all medieval and post medieval. But there are far better qualified people here to speak on these matters than a relative novice like myself.
Oh and if your fort is anyrhing like mine, yes the yellow stuff is still there 😉
Out of interest, and I'm not asking for a postcode here, which part of the borders are you at?
Im not teying to cadge on to you but its an area rich in history absolutely full of earthworks, hillforts etc. Fascinating place really particularly around Gallashiels and the Catrail.
