OK My Honest opinion.

Posted because it is a Treasure Tale.

Far-Fetched ,

But Names can be changed to protect the Innocent, Misspelled
going by Sound or Memory. The fact the Guy can't be confirmed to have existed means Nothing.

the fact the Army blew them off, means even less.

Dates can be changed for various reasons.
the robbery may have not been in 1822.
But may have been mistaken Because of the Missing 22's

& Numbers
can be changed . Perhaps the Strong Box Contained $1000 give or take

and if dates are wrong it would also explain the missing news report.

Also the Fact She was labeled a Fiction writer by a relative could have Meant "Don't Bother Me"
"I Don't wanna Answer Questions, on something I Know nothing about"

If that cash was found, I'd keep it under wraps, and not tell anyone - move from the area where it was found, and live it up...!

I'd Claim I Dug one, Test the Waters, So to speak. See what happens.
Hopefully sell it for $10, mill.

Perhaps sometime in the Future, Magically Find another.

worse thing to do is flood the Market.

There is probably no other gold coin that still has that High a Number on earth.

it's value if over 17,000 Exist would Be Melt Value.

From an estimate of $10,00,000

Down to $362.73

Also looks like it was reported around the first of April. Maybe a tall tale of a Aprils fools joke that a "reporter" ran with?
