Archeologist Make Couple Pay $5,000

The bones I have unearthed so far didn't have any jewelry. Hard to find a place not previously swung these days.

most drum sticks don't have rings on them :laughing7:

I wonder if it would be possible to report the bones without being responsible for the costs. This is a conundrum. If I found bones I'd want to do the right thing, but not to be charged/fined/burdened/assessed for doing it. Doing the right thing used to be "the right thing to do", now... not so much, it would seem.

yes, you kick them over to your neighbor's yard, and then call.

*Note to self, if bones are found cover them back up and pretend like nothing happened*

For the sake of the relatives, I'd figure out a way to turn in a body without them knowing who found it. There was a lady went missing months before, and friend who was loading his trailer onto the log truck, saw something glittering in the log pond. Looking closer he could tell it was a gold chain on the neck of a body. He called the police, and said he'd never do it again. He got hauled in and questioned, let go, then repeated over and over again for several days. Being a good guy and doing the right thing sometimes -- well -- no good deed goes unpunished. Because archeological sensitive remains are found on your property, why should you have to pay for them to be studied. They -- the gummit -- should have to ask your permission to dig, otherwise the word is shovel and shut up. They were buried there to begin with, they could just stay buried there, why do they have to be moved? Why would anyone from the government have any need to know.

I found human remains once but it was on provincial land which cost the taxpayers money, not me specifically.
The provincial park archies were pleased with me and treated me good but when the pompous federal dudes showed up, they *****ed and belittled me, refusing to even give me any info on the remains.
Total a-holes but I finally found out that the skeleton was a pre-contact Native man. I have pictures but that wouldn't be appropriate here.
Next time this happens, I WILL NOT be calling those dicks but I will call up the band office at the nearest reserve and let the Natives deal with their own ancestors.
The Canadian Heritage Act states that all artifacts belong to the crown and therefore, the $5,000 should be paid by the government (taxpayers) as the landowner does not have ownership.
Archies never fill in their holes and if you call them onto your land, you will be stuck with a landscaping bill as well.
I would assume that the $5,000 was the cost given by private contractors, as there's hardly any government archies left anymore due to funding.
Like anything in this country nowadays.......it's all been privatized.
Cheers,
Dave.
