thanks Crow and IPUK... the treasure legend of Ahmed Shah is also tied with the hard to price vast wealth of the Mughls of india whom he robbed. It is believed to be buried or hidden in present day Afghanistan.Conspiracy theories surround the treasure as well...

There are still "proper" wild lands and mountains in those south Asian countries, where anything is possible. I recall watching a fascinating programme about a warlord in Afghanistan helping the US search for Bin Laden some years ago, who decorated his house with marble pillars of an ancient Hindu temple and gave gifts of incredible antiquity to guests that he liked. Questioned where they were from, and with a shrug if the shoulders he said "they're everywhere when you know where to look".

IPIU The site you mention I have had the god fortune to visits. The days of anyone plundering the site is long gone now. it is Provence of archeologists..
There is another site nearby muich more of interest as it dealt with nearly 300 odd years of plundering grave sites by various Spanish families living there and during the War of Independence from Spain a vast treasure was stolen from there by pirates around 1819.
Crow
Our venerable Crow seems to be slipping...
Not that site with the Spanish family who used bulldozers and where the archaeologists are now in control. This one is further towards the Andes and under tons of sand.....

Hey Crow
You really do know your sands...
As always, you've hit the spot, it's near Piura. Perhaps calling it a city is incorrect, it's more a citadel and burial mounds.
This one was definitely Chimu and Moche as the recovered pieces were checked over in Switzerland prior to bring sold quietly to private collectors.
Ever come across the diplomat smuggler who based hid operations in Panama?

Senor Crow, you cawed out the truth of the area. We make the drive to Puira on a regal basis from our home in Ecuador.
"Ah now perked up old missing feathered Crow who is scratching his beak. Hmmmm most sand dunes there are nearer to coast and nearest to Andes would be near Piura"
Yup, the dunes run the coast of Peru and Ecuador and as you climb up to Piura it transitions to farmed land. Along much of the coast in northern Peru are oil wells and a refinery that arid region.
