I got carried away cleaning this lock and of course all the iron inside had pretty much degraded, I left the pin that holds the lever in place though. I added a pic of the finds that I made that day for size comparison. I'm curious about this old lock and have been trying to imagine what it could have gone to.

Exactly what I was thinking...
Here's a pic of an ornate example.
I'm guessing that one with a lock would have seen a commercial setting
such as a "Mom and Pop" corner store....

Not necessarily .. I have the one that belonged to my grandmother, and although the catches are a bit different, they have locks on them. At some point, somebody even added hasps to it. The thought was that when the iceman delivered your blocks, it was in your best interest to keep your goodies locked up! Guess times were hard!

You are right. Back in the day, boarding houses were vere common.
The main kitchen or individual rooms might have been furnished with just such an icebox.

Best,

When I was a youngster I worked in a dairy store where we scooped ice cream and made malts and sodas, etc. We had a big walk in cooler that had a lock that looked much like that. No one had a key so it stayed unlocked all the time however. Monty
