My friend is somewhat of a collector and before he holds any yard sales I go through and confiscate anything that I find interesting :icon_pirat:

Today I grabbed these two tools because they looked cool and neither of us knew what they were for.

All I can think of is that they resemble some sort of punch? But if so, what for? Any ideas.

The darker one reads "STANLEY 42" on the inside of the handle and the other reads "MADE IN USA".

Thanks.

Well there I go!

Interesting, I've never seen one before.

Looking at the punch head, I can totally see how it works now. Do you think the lighter colored tool is the same thing? That one is a bit different and the punch head doesn't look like it would be for saw teeth.

Thanks bigcypresshunter. -WIT
I dont recognize the first one but its probably also a saw set. They made many different variations. I had a ton of them and saw vices but they dont demand a high price I guess because hand saw setting is not popular any more and so many are out there. The Stanley 42 is better than the other.

Cool, thanks again.

I just saw the Stanley in unused condition, in the box for $56 and the auction is still going. Not as old as mine either. (but it IS unused...)

I'll just hold onto them for a while, I only paid $5 for the set + a "5 minute vulcanizer" tool so I can't complain.

Boxes can definitely add a few more dollar$ to the overall price.

I've been selling on ebaY for 9 years now and I've found that it's hit or miss on even some older or rare items. If I don't make the sale on the first couple of tries, I just keep it for a while longer and try again.

The last link you posted looks to be the newest of them all, or at least appears that way because of the sticker. That's just a guess though.

I used to sell eBay and I found out that most of the antique woodworking tools that I sold were actually bought by people that used them. They just dont make hand tools like they used to. Especially woodworking tools. Todays hand tools just dont have the feel and quality of old tools with rosewood handles.

I should really go back and get the wood planer and hand crank drill that he'll be selling!

I had them both in my hand but passed and I've been thinking about them... I will make a phone call in the morning.

The unusual Stanely planes get the best prices. Look for the number. They are all numbered.

Did you or do you sharpen tools? I sharpened hand saws for quite a few years. I did them all by hand. I have a few setters still. Sharpening hand saws was quite the art. You would clean the saw of all dirt first. You would set the teeth before sharpening. Place the saw in a block vise and go after it with a single cut triangle file of the right size. All you wanted to do was "wake" the points up. It was easy to to remove too much material by not being careful. I did not have access to retoothing tools, so care was a high priority. Many times a cracked tooth would break off during the setting process. Hand saws became so cheap to buy people just quit bringing them to me. Pricing was gauged by the number of teeth per inch wheather it was a crosscut or rip point. I still get a chance to sharpen some circular saw blades now and then but most folks use carbide blades now. HH

Never have myself. I just like to buy and sell things.

Thanks for the story though.

I have done this! A old guy showed me how. Got my saw all sharpened and set and then hit a nail the first time I used it. :angry5: :cussing: :BangHead: :violent1:

but hey, I knew how to sharpen it again. :tongue3: :laughing9:

Yeah on the filing he said just brighten up the metal. Use your thumb to feel what is sharp and what is dull.

Getting a kink out of a saw, now that's a art.
