I originally posted trigger guard reply #1 for sure but I deleted my post when I realized how large this thing is lol. ::) I have a bad habit of posting in haste. Now I dont feel so embarrassed. :D It sure resembles a trigger guard but is too large I think. Also I dont see the screw holes. I like the seat idea in reply #12. It also looks like it was welded.
Your right

No it was not welded. Its solid brass. It was a bout 12 inches deep in the ground. I'm sure it came off of one of the boats that was worked on in this area. I might be wrong, but I do believe it came off one of the boats. I also found other brass object in the same area. Thanks for all the comments, and thanks for viewing.

I'm more inclined to go with something boat related than rifle related.  Still have no idea.

Sorry I meant that the stubs sticking out look like to me it may be brazed or soldered points that have broken off. Afterall there are no screw holes. I realize you dont "weld" brass. Weld was the wrong word. But you have it in hand, I only have the pics.chair.webp

I do understand. The little knobs on it looks as to be decarative spots on the brass. They don't look to have been attached to anything. I wish I knew. I thank all you guys for trying to help. We have some good, and interesting answers. Thanks.

I wonder how it was attached?

It looks like to me on the small end of the piece there might have been a part broken off. Its not smooth on the end. Maybe the tit under the spoon shaped end could have been longer. It looks as if it might have a piece broken from it. I'm just guessing from what I can see on it. It could have had something on that end to fasten it down that got broke off. The other end could have had a piece that would have attached it to something. You guys have been great with the comments. Thanks very much.

if there was a grooving in the stock and the tigger guard sat in the groove held in place by barrel band type straps that went around both the wood and it and when the bands were tighten it "married" the two together in place .
