I live in Great Falls but the pickins are slim here. I have even approached some locals about detecting on their property but most would rather not have you dig on their land. Usually I research the old fort sites and try to go there. Once again though most of these are on private property too so it's touch and go. There is one area here in Great Falls I can point you to where an old housing subdivision used to be. I've had luck there in the past if you want to try that.

There are a some within a few hours drive time but just as stated above, most either sit on private property or are protected by the state.

Here is a link you can use to find out who owns the land of an area you may be looking at. Just click on the area to zoom in and see the number listed on a particular property. Verify the area you're interested in and then find that number on the private land list. It's pretty easy to use but it takes patience zooming in and navigating around the map.
