Found this unusual piece of costume jewelry in my Moms stuff. My Dad gave me some junk to try and find out if it has any monetary value.

It says Nettie Rosenstein on the back. I researched her jewelry a bit but couldnt find this portrait. Who is it and what is the rarity and value? I think its plated and looks like plastic on the front. I see 2 screws on the back but I dont know for what reason.

Thanks.

From workmanship, style and construction. Fairly new. 1980+
Probably made in one of the asian countrys.
(I have been wrong before.)

You really think so? Costume jewelry replicas? They say imitation is the highest form of flattery. This was most likely my Grandmas and its very likely an original Nettie Rosenstein. I never suspected otherwise but its something to consider.

Thanks for posting.

I would have thought this pc was a painting on porcelain
certainly not chalk on paper
I have to retract my initial thinking.
Tha makers mark on the metal?

It appears to be water paint on plastic. The makers mark is Nettie Rosenstein. I stated this in my opening post. It is without any shadow of a doubt costume jewelry, (although very collectible). I also posted a costume jewelry pendant with a matching painting from Morningloryantiques, but no further information. The value? ...we will have to wait and see. It is not chalk on paper. My finger may have been wet.

Im marking it solved although we cannot find any idea of value. Thanks.

BCH, I've tried to find a miniature portrait artist for Nettie, but no luck. I also did a general search to find a mini portrait artist by the last name of Hayes, Mayes, and other combinations of the signature, but again, no luck. Can you email MorningGlory and ask what price the other one sold? Breezie

Thanks Breezie. The other one pictured by Morningloryantiques is in a private collection, not for sale. I have a feeling this could reach the $500 range which is great for a costume jewelry piece.

It looks like the artist's name is Mayer.
Maybe Mayer or Bayer. Thanks. :icon_thumright:

The matching pendant on Morningloryantiques link (right) doesnt seem to have an artists name
like my brooch (left).. :icon_scratch:

I think the painting of the portrait in yours is better than the one at MG's. It's a beautiful piece. Breezie

I disassembled this piece 3 years ago and today I will carefully attempt to reassemble it. As soon as I take some better pics, its going on eBay or Heritage auction and we will soon find out its value.

I'm curious what it went for, can you say?
I put it on eBay at a $99 opening bid for 7 days, a lot of watchers but no takers. I lowered the opening bid to $59 and Morningloryantiques snatched it up in the closing seconds of the auction. I got $59.oo + shipping..

Thats the fun of eBay. Maybe I sold it too cheap..I dunno but Im moving on. Im selling almost everything. Ive been a pack rat too long.
