I know a person from Jordan, and today he let me pick a coin from a box of them that he had. He told me that metal detectors are illegal there, and if your cought with one, you get 5 years in jail & a $10,000 fine (usd) . Apparently there are a lot of gold & silver relics & coins in the area that date back to the time before christ, and the King of Jordan likes to keep that stuff for himself. But, he told me that when there is heavy rains (rarely) that it is easy to find the coins on the ground, which is how he got these ones. The reason I chose the one I did, is because there is a scene on the reverse side that shows 2 warriors fighting.....just looked cool. So, now I am trying to identify it, but the sites I have found are overwhelming. So, anyone good with the ancient coins? This coin is very small, about 1/3 the size of a dime. It has clay-like material stuck to it that I have not tried to clean off.

Paul

PS
I will get some pics up tonight, or tomorrow

Re: anyone good at identifying ancient middle eastern coins?

I have come across the same problem. I cannot find anyone that can I.D. A SINGLE Mid-East coin that I have and I have 14 of them-12 are silver , 1 copper, 1 bronze.
Everyone can be read.

Obverse actually reads DN CONSTANTIVS PF AVG

The "DN" is off-flan.

Emperor: Constantius II
Obverse: DN CONSTAN-TIVS PF AVG
Bust Type: Pearl Diademeed Draped & Curiassed
Reverse: FEL TEMP-REPARATIO
Fallen Horesman: no beard, wears cap, reaching
Exergue: SMKS
City: Cyzicus
R.I.C. Attribution: Cyzikus 104
Diameter: 16-18 mm
R.I.C. Rarity: C2

Date Struck: 351-354 A.D.

Gotta love desert patination (typical for coins found in the Mideast).
