At about the 10-o-clock position the stamp appears to be a "G" with a little 12 and a period underneath it. Sort
of like an exponent. At least, that's what I'm seeing.

The firm made buttons from about 1841-1910 and they did make some for the military. The number at the bottom is for the size of the button, yours being 28 mm.The one I pasted is 25 mm.Let's see the front.

Oh, I just wish I could show the front! All I found was the back. I will be concentrating on that area next time though.

Using the wonderful info you've provided already I think I found a sample of this button online.
