Hi there,

I'm new to the forum and fairly new to Wisconsin...I am from Washington State where decent sized nuggets can still be found. I'm wondering if anyone has ever tried panning in the Mecan River in Central Wisconsin? I would love to get into this as a hobby for me and my two boys and it would be awesome if we could start out close to where we live. Any suggestions??

Welcome to the Tnet! I can't help with the panning of the Mecan but, as a WI native, I think I remember Trout Unlimited used to stock the Mecan. If you don't find gold, you can fish for trout! Good luck. TTC

Thanks! It is definitely great for trout! I think I might try my hand at panning this weekend on the river...fingers crossed:)

Know ahead of time, you won't get much. ANYTHING you get will be big news! Let us know what you get.... some or none. TTC

Luck?

Did you have any luck? I pan at nugget lake alOt. But was interested in trying near wausau. Anyone know locations in that area?

The only gold that is economically viable has already been bought by Aquila Resources. This location is about 15 miles east of Wausau. The property was bought up by this Canadian company and has drilled in several areas and found gold at 450 ft with 10.02 g/t. They are expecting to drill again and the area is open to small scale open pit mining. The only other place near Wausau is the flowage just south of Wausau itself. Good luck in your prospecting there.
I live in Waupaca County and will be prospecting in Marathon County next year.

How did you do at Nugget Lake, any success or just flour as usual? If we have an indian summer here. I might make a trip there to check it out.
I know they don't allow motorized equipment there. Just panning and slueces I believe.

To answer your question. No, I haven't tried that river and never heard of anyone doing so. Wisc. is not very well known for anything but flour and very, very few actual nuggets being found. I will post a pic of the glacial gold belts and areas that are known to hold deposits.

Eureka!!

I was recently told by my son-in-law that his uncle had caught a carp a couple years back that when he gutted it out, he found a couple small diamonds. I know that diamonds are in Wis., usually yellow and small with the exceptional larger ones being extremely rare.

Eureka!!
