anyone ever find "gold" roman coins on ebay?

im gonna purchase a few coins just cause,my wife and i thought it would be cool. 2 bucks a pop for ancient roman, what the heck. its funny tho, im reading some feedbacks where people find gold in these lots. seriously...... im sure they have been weighed or picked through for the gold. i doubt gold would be that hard to pick out from a bunch of bronze and what not coins. i can inderstand silver, if your lucky, but gold? has anyone in here got some ebay romans and discovered a gold one????

I don't know... never bought any coins that way.

I do remember though, back a few-three weeks, someone was getting a few little (4mm?) gold coins with the sack-o-romans they bought from some company (not e-bay).

Seemed to elicite quite a small uproar about actually getting gold.

Maybe someone can remember that post...

I got those once off eBay and they are interesting but no gold or silver. They were very tiny coins , 8 to 10 mm dia. It was fun, but I wouldn't expect too much, especially any gold, there's no chance of that happening.

Good luck!

Re: anyone ever find "gold" roman coins on ebay?

I purchased a few hundred "uncleaned" Roman coins a few years ago when they were still .60 to $1.00 apiece and never found a gold or silver coin. There have been a few sellers who plant gold fanams in their large orders to create feedback stating "I found a gold coin!" so they can boost their sales. A gold Aureus or silver Denarius would stand out like a sore thumb in any batch of bronze or copper coins so the only ones you will get are the ones the coin seller wants you to have.
This being said, I don't regret what I spent on my uncleaned coins. Many of the bronze or copper coins still display great detail after all this time and can be easily identified and dated. The cleaning process can take a while, but the result is a real piece of history. Good luck on your coins!

Well done Daryl for finding it.

If you read this you will find that the gold coins are not Roman & its a con. Those that have little knowledge of Roman coins find these (Indian Fanams) & give feedback that they have found Gold. Making people like you think they mean Roman.

You will never find a Roman Gold coin in those lots. I deal in Antiquities so have some indepth knowledge of the subject.

Also if you are looking to buy a Gold Roman Coin on its own your going to met another difficulty. There are thousands of Fakes. Very good fakes made from REAL GOLD. Only experienced experts/collectors can tell them apart. The signs are small - like small changes in weight, surface appearance, & the edge of the coin. Which means your likely to waste over $100 a coin (thats a cheap one).

So buy these cheap lots & enjoy cleaning & identifing them but do not ever expect to find a Gold. If you are very lucky & buy enough (like lots of 1000s) then you may find the odd silver.

What you might get is the odd RARE Bronze which covers your costs.

Any help, just ask.

See mine it cost me £400 (but I know its real). No way it could slip into a $2 lot.

If you want help buying a real one & you have the money I could help.

Say again?? Are you going to buy a lot of uncleaned Roman coins or are you going to just buy the American Eagle. Not quite sure what you plan to do?

sorry, yes i am going to buy a small lot of uncleaned. as for the gold, i would rather pay out 600.00 for a eagle than 600.00 for a roman gold. now thats just right now, i have never owned a roman coin at all. maybe ill get hooked on it and specialize in just roman coinage. i was into old bottles but have drifted away since i have been more at home caring for my child than in outdoors discovering them.
is that better?

Better.

Owning an American Eagle is like owning bullion. It is just in coin form. Its value will rise and fall due mainly in the price of gold. Other countries have minted their own 1oz gold bullion coins for years. The $50 American Eagle is now $750 plus s/h. If you put the money into a rare gold coin, its value is tied more to the desire, rarity and condition of the coin. They tend to appreciate in value over time but there is no guarantee. Neither is a safe bet, but I would bet more on the rare coins now than the price of gold.

If you have a good bottle collection that can be turned. Take that money and invest in something that interests you more and may appreciate more.

Just something to think about.

Yeap agree with the above.

Silver prices have done better than Gold over the past few years.

I have flitted from collection to collection. Its always worth considering selling one to fund another.

Now that I am experienced in antiquities I use my knowledge to fund my collection instead of having to sell stuff. ;D

I agree as well. I've been investing over the last 6 mos in older, in AUNC to UNC key date US gold coins. Indians, eagles and half eagles, all minted 1911 or before. I find them more interesting in bullion coins, and they will rise in value not only from tracking the precious metal market but also due to the collectables market. And dug, I have a couple of Soverigns, Old Head Victorias, but I don't know as much about the market for these. Ebay seems to be flooded with them.

Also lads, a word of warning about buying ancient coins on ebay. There are a lot of counterfeit out there.

I have been buying uncleaned lots of ancient coins from several different dealers for about 6 months.I started with ebay and then went to different dealers recommended by experts from a well know legit ancient coin site.I've come to the conclusion that unless you have special contacts with people in those countries who actively find hoards of ancients your chances of getting a nice coin are nil. When you purchase a lot of uncleans they have been picked over several times.
If you really have an interest in ancient coins visit "The Forvm" and do some reading.Find a certain area of ancients you have interest and then search for those coins on ebay.Study the prices for awhile before bidding.BEWARE,this is the area where you find counterfiet coins. The forvm will help you in deciding if the coin is fake or not if you can't find the coin in their fakes section.Do not mention the word EBAY on the forum site and be prepared to post a photo of the coin.

I bought 20 or so and knew it was a gamble.
No luck but even worse is that most of the coins had no detail to be found.
Oooo nice a bronze puck...... :(

Also be prepared to deal with a great deal of "holier-than-thou" folks at the above-mentioned site. If you can handle the stench of people who think they are better than you..it is a great resource.... Also, if you shop around, you can find coins much cheaper and of a higher quality than listed on that site (Divide by 3 for the true value of the coin =) ).
