I was curious to see if anyone had ever hunted a golf course?
Seems like there would be a lot of jewelry and coins,
especially near the clubhouse and the 1st, 9th, 10th, and 18th tees and greens.

I was golfing Saturday and witnessed the ladies taking off their wedding bands before they played. I am sure most take their watches off and almost everyone marks their balls on the greens with coins.

A lot of potential there??

I don't know why not, as far as the grass is concerned at least, because every time you hit the ball, your club take a giant divit of grass (3" wide by 5 or 6" long) and a lot of golfers don't even replace them but they are supposed to.

But you would have to know the management I would think because golf is such a "gentleman's game" ...lol.

We have a couple courses closed down and sold to developers around here. No permission needed there.

Just curious anyway.

Thanks for reply Reddie!

Actually my brother and I detected around a couple tees of a course we used to play, right after the owner closed it, to put up condos. We detected only briefly and got some clad before a chain link fence went up around it. No telling though what got away out there.
I would like to detect a couple of the older courses around here. But unless I could buy them. I have as much chance detecting them as I do of buying them. None, nada, zip, in my dreams. HH

if you go at night make sure you have the headphone on you wouldn't want someone calling the cops because they hear weird beeping coming from the coarse ;)

guys i was joking. im not gonna go tear up any property. i always get permission and would never go out with flashlights in the night. And because i think the water would be cold.

Years ago I was able to detect on a course when a golfer lost his wedding ring near the sixth hole. Somewhere from the tee off to the pin. I should have charged by the hour...................When I got near the green I spotted it near a sandtrap just sitting on the grass. Later the man told me he took it off to get out of the sand and forgot it when he putted. I only got on the course because I recovered balls from a water hazard every two weeks.

You can't lose anything by asking, and explain that you will pick up trash found on the course.

thats why we have flashlights. ;D

Stud54, I hope you are not ruining things for others in Iowa by not asking permision, trespassing, and other things of the sort while enjoying this great hobby. GET PERMISSION, DONT TRESPASS, AND DONT RUIN IT FOR THOSE OF US THAT DO IT RIGHT!

I hunted a golf course a few years ago that they were making into an industrial park. This course dated from the 1800's. Finds were few and far between, but hunting the hundreds of acres was very lucrative. Had a hunting partner, and we spent a lot of hours there until they tore everything up, paved, built, etc. Now the Colonial acre is a new factory.
We found over 3 dozen Colonial coins, oldest being a 1722 Rosa Americana 2 pence, CT coppers, MA coppers, NJ coppers, Large cents - oldest was 1798. Indian Heads - best was 1869 Primo condition (woulda been UNC if not for a light green toning) , Barber dimes - best was 1896-0, Seated Dimes. 3 Barber Halfs - 1903-O in AU condition, 4 gold rings, and about $8 in clad. Colonials were still popping up as they paved the new parking lot.
They best way to hunt an active course is to become a member of it.

I've wondered several times why they haven't changed the name of 'golf'.It originated in Scotland,of course, and women were not allowed..the sign read: Gentlemen Only Ladies Forbidden hence the name GOLF.

Sorry, the story about the GOLF sign is de-bunked, and the true history of the word can be found at this site:

http://www.snopes.com/language/acronyms/golf.asp

That website is GREAT for finding out whether the things that are told on the internet are true or not.

As for hunting a golf course, I agree with those who say to ask permission. What's the worst thing that can happen?

Go for it.

Good luck,

Mike
