Any permits needed

No permits needed on the public beaches. Please be aware that you CAN NOT hunt on the Cape Hatteras National Seashore - National Park. If you are caught with a metal detector there you may possibly loose it, your car, lots of money and perhaps even serve time. The boundries should be marked.

And, of course, that's the part of the Outer Banks you'd really want to detect, where all the shipwrecks are...

Hmm this seems pretty close to Kill Devil Hills (where I'm heading in Oct.) Is it legal to detect in / around that beach? I see its only about 12 miles from Cape Hatteras.

As long as you stay out of the National Park and any State Park areas, you can detect.

The beach around Kill Devil Hills should be fine.
