Not if it was copied BEFORE 1973.
Sure but the recreations in the link are after 1973 Im sure lol because the Atocha was not even discovered yet by Mel Fisher. Im just wondering if these modern re-creations are stamped COPY?

EDIT:The Atocha was discovered in 1985 but Im sure the recreations are much newer. So the Hobby Protection Act should apply. Right? :dontknow:

maybe not as purpose made jewelry?

yea maybe. Im curious. :dontknow:

The OPs coin has been IDed as fake and was probably made in a foreign country sold on eBay or maybe even before 1973 so it doesnt have to comply.. I dont know if the OP has had time to check back yet.

The Atocha recreations are modern and openly sold in the US. Im just curious if they are stamped COPY under the Hobby Protection Act.

if you go to the Mel Fisher web site (commercial museum) some look like they may be and others don't.

I guess Irisbond is not going to post back. We did the best we could to help with your coin. It appears to be a known fake or possibly a jewelry piece never meant to deceive, and may not have to comply, with the Hobby Protection Act, which specifies that the word COPY be on the coin somewhere. Its a good imitation of an early 1700s Spanish Colonial gold 8 Escudo made from silver.
