Found at old home site with a grave yard. It had a bottom but disintegrated when I took it out of the ground.

Was the bottom also copper? Was the bottom flat or was it shaped like the other half? :) Breezie

The bottom was rust, it fell apart in my hands.

You definitely have a strange item, and since it looks like a combination of both brass and copper, I think it could be a Victorian collar button.

looks like a cuff link to me. the middle clasp thing would be used to widen the cuff itself and keep it spaced out.

Am I seeing correctly that there's a hole in the rod portion? Does it go all the way through, and is it threaded? And lastly, are there grooves on the oval part that would accomodate a rod going through the existing one (or attatch to it, perpendicular to the existing one)?

Might be a bell that was used in some religions for the deceased to notify someone that they were in fact "alive!" A line was attached from the casket to the bell. Sometimes postmortem muscle movements caused the bell to ring even when actual death had occurred! Hence the term,"dead ringer". I ain't maken this stuff up! It was found at a burial site, so it might be worth looking into. :icon_scratch:

No hole no threads and it smooth all over except for the tit on the shaft and small grove on the shaft end.
