Here is more on the Atlantic Coast Line RR:
"Other lines in the Carolinas and Virginia were acquired over the next quarter century and various joint ownership and partnership agreements were established, some long-lasting and some not. A permanent connection to Augusta had become a problem, however, and it was not until 1897, when the stock of the Charleston & Western Carolina Railway was purchased, that Augusta came securely into the fold.

In 1897-98, the various South Carolina lines (not including the C&WC) were consolidated into a new company, the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Company of South Carolina. On August 8, 1899, the ACL of SC acquired from the Central of Georgia its half-interest in the lease of the Georgia Railroad. This gave ACL connections to Atlanta and Macon.

Meanwhile, consolidation of ACL component railroad companies continued in North Carolina and Virginia. Although the owners had decided to bring all of their railroads into a single company, it was determined that a state-by-state approach to consolidation was necessary given the varying railroad regulations of each state. The Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Company of Virginia was established in early 1898 and the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Company of North Carolina was given approval by the NC legislature the following year."

It may be my imagination, but on pic #2, I think I can make out "R R # N #", maybe R. R. C. N. C. ?

Still digging on the bottom part.... I was thinking "LUG. DEPT" or "U. S. DEPT." ???

Just my guesses, but think the May 9 1909 lends some credence to the ACL references....

The way I get decent close-up pics out of my digital camera is by taking the pic farther away on the highest resolution. I then zoom/crop on my computers photo editor. Some digital cams are just not suited to taking close-ups.

Arid may be right on with his idea of a chauffeurs's badge because the first ones were made in 1909. Which state did you find it in? Breezie

OG come on we all know that one Original Gangsta!! LOL no seriously I have taken pic after pic of this tag and cant get it any clearer. I dont think its a Chauffers tag either. I am leaning towards the RR idea. I searched SC chauffers tags and none look anything like this..

I think there are 2 A's. Could that be possible? A.A.C.L. Automobile Association?

You Might try finding someone with a scanner have them scan it you may get better resolution that way, then have them email the pic to you!!!!!!!! :) :icon_sunny:

OOPS forgot 1 part scanners don't like silver objects they tend to cut off edges put a piece of paper or yellow napking over it before scanning!!!!

The A.C.L. could stand for "Automobile Chauffeur's License," and the letters in front of it could be the state. Breezie

This has nothing to do with a railroad. It's a time check from Atlantic Coast Lumber Company in Georgetown, SC. It's 36 mm aluminum. The top should read ACL Corp'n. The bottom should read Log Dept. It's listed as R9, which means there are 3-4 specimens known.
Sounds like a great ID. :icon_thumright: Pic and/or source would be nice.

I can't give you a pic, but it's listed on page 120 in TAMS South Carolina Tokens by Tony Chibbaro.
:icon_thumright:

Buzzgator described it as a tag and I think we assumed it was thin. That and the bad pics didnt help us much. I had no idea it was a token. Its a great ID catfish!
