A monogrammed shield of universal application, but has been ruled out as a saddle shield.

There was a lengthy discussion on these in the American Digger a while back .. If I get a chance, I will go back through them and copy the info for you.

Thanks, it was found on a hill by a creek, on an old Indian camp, (dont know if that has any bearing or not), I presume the camp was much older than the artifact, although i talked to a man today who found a 'trade pipe' on a camp that I supposed was much older. :dontknow:

That shield is off the front of a bicycle.
That is what I thought, bicycle head badge, since it is curved. Looks like the ones creskol posted are flat. But you would probably have to find pic of it on bike to know for sure.

The trouble with the bicycle headtube badge theory is that they come with every letter of the alphabet .. unless they were added later for a personalized touch, a bicycle manufacturer would use the same letter.

I don't believe they came off of bicycles or motorcycles either, and here is why.

I have one of these, too, that has the letter "S" on it. (pictured below)

The one featured has the letter "C" on it.

I have seen one with the letter "D" on it, as pictured below.

I have seen others with different letters on them, most recently one with an "A" on it.

If they were a bicycle or motorcycle emblems, the letters would not be so varied if varied at all. If, for example, they came off of a Schwinn bicycle, the letter would probably be an "S" and the shield would be unique to Schwinn, with no other company copying their logo or headtube emblem. (please visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Head_badge) The same would hold true for a motorcycles, if in fact they had headtubes. Most motorcycles do not have a headtube on which an emblem could be mounted.

Secondly, a headtube on a bicycle is only about an inch in diameter. The curvature on these shields is designed to be installed on something 3 inches in diameter. (see photo below)

My belief is that these are personalized monogrammed shields sold as novelties with universal applications.
