I think the sheath composition might be helpful . I see rivets on the sheath and blade handle. Also is there small pieces of Aluminum on the sheath ?

Forgot Nice FIND ALSO !!

The two hooks on the sheath look like they might attach to the old military style canvas belts with a couple of rows of metal eyelets for attachment. Missing handle probably wood. Nice find.

It is a WWII era USMC bolo. You will find identical examples of the bolo and its' distinctive leather sheath by doing an image search for "USMC bolo".

Nice save! Congrats. Cutlery rivets were not invented till 1876, so it will date 1876 or newer. If that knife hasnt been in a fire, there is a real good chance of restoring that knife. It would loose a little of its size from cleaning up & might have a few pits in blade. But could probably be saved.

I think BAW is the winner

I didn't find any with the same guard /quillon on a search the other day..

The first picture is confusing, as it seems to show a guard, which the USMC bolo does not have. Upon examining the second picture, which shows the bolo in its' sheath, I realized that what I took to be a guard was actually the metal throat of the sheath, which apparently became detatched from the leather and stuck to the blade.

Ahh , that would explain it!
I noticed the piece on top of sheaths well enough. Didn't consider it coming off.
