Curious and interesting piece. I think those countersunk screw holes would indicate it was permanently attached to something. Good luck on the ID.

Found this item and it looks so familiar but I am not sure what it is. It does have some numbers on it if that helps. Also found both colonial and civil war era items at this site, found in the Charleston SC area. Thanks,
I'm going to guess some sort of decorative clockworks.

Old post but the ID is not correct. Here’s the correct ID: your item is a roof purchase “crank” from a call bell system to ring servants bells. (Sometimes bells were rung via tassels; sometimes via buttons or knobs). The wires from each room went up through the walls into the attic. At every angle, a “crank” had to be installed to transfer the motion 90 degrees. The bells wouldve been mounted on a call board with the names of each room under each bell, located outside, or in the servants quarters. Your example is listed as #10 in Sutcliffe’s “The Modern Plumber” from the 1890s, as a “roof purchase.” Again, it was for a servants call bell system—specifically for the bell wires when located in the attic of a house. There’s actually an entire dissertation about these specific devices in Charleston South Caroline between 1740 and 1900 by Wendy Madill and it’s available online free to view. Cheers, BB
