With the hole it looks more like a plane cap than the blade itself. The plane cap tightens to hold down the blade. It too should be iron but it could be a homeade "plane cap" made out of brass by the owner. People used to make do back in the day where today has a throw away mentality. I sold many vintage planes on eBay and have never seen a brass cap nor a brass blade iron from the factory. But maybe a cap. I will try to search. Is the hole threaded ?Montana Jim said:bigcypresshunter said:agreed it is not a plane iron.chipveres said:To go back to the blade for a moment: Plane blades are always made of iron or steel. Yea... the original poster never said it was brass... so I sent with the plane iron.
If brass... then obviously it's not a blade.I agree with that completely.
try a magnet. If the magnet sticks, its ferrous. (iron, steel)jraven said:I thought it was writing too, but as I look closer I cant make anything out. It looks like there are threads in the hole. How would I be able to tell if its brass??
