try a hoe blade for trimming weeds from around crops being raised-- a tapered wood handle went thru the hole in it and a nail or screw held it in place. ( the area was a "feild" was it not thus used for farming? --it fits the useage of the land nicely)--- the lead is a 58 cal 3 ringer projectile ( I think that its the type used by the civil war era enfield 3 band rifle--- if I remember correctly) this type of pojectile is a type of miniball used during the civil war no doubt -- but it could be post war also* --- so look in that feild more try to find other civil war related "military" items to help assist in "proving" that the site where came from was indeed a military camp ground area during the civil war--if it was a civil war camp site area where more than a few men camped you will find more items no doubt. --- good luck --Ivan

To go back to the blade for a moment: Plane blades are always made of iron or steel. In case it's brass, it's not a plane blade. In fact they are usually called a "plane iron".

agreed it is not a plane iron.

Yea... the original poster never said it was brass... so I sent with the plane iron.

If brass... then obviously it's not a blade. I agree with that completely.

With the hole it looks more like a plane cap than the blade itself. The plane cap tightens to hold down the blade. It too should be iron but it could be a homeade "plane cap" made out of brass by the owner. People used to make do back in the day where today has a throw away mentality. I sold many vintage planes on eBay and have never seen a brass cap nor a brass blade iron from the factory. But maybe a cap. I will try to search. Is the hole threaded ?
Almost every blade iron from the factory has writing across the top. It almost looks like writing on the first pic. Help us out jraven. Is it brass? is that writing on the top of the first pic?

I thought it was writing too, but as I look closer I cant make anything out. It looks like there are threads in the hole. How would I be able to tell if its brass?? here are some more pics.

try a magnet. If the magnet sticks, its ferrous. (iron, steel)

Nonmagnetic + green patina = brass. A plane hold down cap of this type would have a threaded hole for adjusting. I will have to research to see if any company made a plane with a brass cap. Many planes back in the early days before the Industrial Revolution were homemade and could have been made of any metal available.
