any idea what this is? my husband struck it with a sledge hammer at our work sight and it sparked and only a small piece broke off. the out side is green and looks like it has been melted and the inside is a light green with white covering it and rust spots. it almost looks like it had a crust pored on it. sorry the pics are so bad. 2015-08-18_19-27-43_218.jpg2015-08-18_19-35-10_312.jpg2015-08-18_19-34-55_161.jpg2015-08-18_19-28-03_29.jpg

I'm no pro, but I would say do not hit it with a sledge anymore. Looks to me like a geode with iron crusted around it. The exposed side looks like probably quartz crystal and I would bet it is either a crystal nodule (solid) or geode (hollow). No telling what would be inside but judging by the iron around it there is a good chance there is amethyst inside.

Either cut it open with a diamond or silicon carbide blade (optimal) or if you don't have the resources, look for a fracture and start slapping it with a chisel and hammer til it breaks open. That's what I'd do.
