🔎 UNIDENTIFIED Any idea what stones are here?

Hi all,
Down here in FL on the beach I pulled this cross and chain a while back. I never did find an exact match on the internet, but it is of Italian origin. My question is the stones, anyone have any idea what they may be? They seem almost black.
Any ideas would be appreciated. I haven't taken it to a jeweler... just kinda interested in what they might be.

Black spinel is my guess. Could be diamonds.

Commonly used black faceted stones in modern jewelry would include diamond or spinel (which could be natural or synthetic) as the most common. Most I have had have been with diamonds. They have virtually no value as gemstones but it gives the owner bragging rights that they have diamond jewelry--great marketing. Your jeweler will be able to test them.

Given the properties believed lay with Spinal stones and set in the cross the cross would have a special meaning to the wearer.
Very nice piece.
