Found this in three pieces in the same hole. Saw it had writing on it and they fit together. Don't have a clue what it says or what it is! Any input? This was found in an area where we've found a lot of early military relics. Thanks for looking.

What size is it?
What letters can you make out of the writing?
What metal do you think it is?

Cheers, Mike

Hey Mike. Its about 3.5 inches long. Not sure about first several letters but that last five does look like "ITALY".

Backside pics ?
And can you take a couple more or wording...
And wash it lightly... and leave wet for first pic...
Then dry for second... try to get in on wording.

Also IF you want after this...
Take a crayon (if available) or pencil... and paper ...
and try to do a light "rubbing" to reveal more if poss.

I know I am asking a lot... but this sometimes will be helpful in coming to a conclusive I.D.

MUCH BETTER !...

And now... we can see what I thought all along... that it doesn't say Italy at all...

BUT... I now see "BURIAL" minus the first separate piece which I think is missing a piece before that one.

It is latin....there is a y on the end "burialy" I __ burialy, you are missing a piece and then it will translate.

Interesting. All three pieces fit together so I don't think it's missing a piece between the letters. This would be the first piece of "graveyard trash" to my knowledge and don't think there is any record of a graveyard in the area (?). Never know though. Thanks for the input AARC and Crispin. Was hoping it would be id'ed as a part from a gun or something, but definitely not a piece from a headstone!

Could be from a gun for all I know...
and will be watching to see if it is I.D.'d.

The bottom of the first and second piece (from the left) match up but the top doesn't. You are probably missing a piece of 2-3cm in width or it may have just disintegrated. I think it started to curve at that point and that would make it a vulnerable structural point and most likely to fracture at that line. The bottom of the "device" had less structural tension and that is why the top piece fractured more...one way or the other you lost a couple of letters. I know a lot of Latin, but I think you are missing at least 2-3 letters that I can't fill in. Perhaps somebody who knows more Latin would identify the word. I don't think it is from a graveyard. Death in latin revolves around mortem and mortis...totally different. It could easily be a tool to a gun.
