Welcome to Tnet Nickc83 :hello: Not the best pic, however the 3rd emerald looks cool :hello2:

IronSpike; you're right; it is adventurine. I grabbed it in a hurry. I've got some emeralds at the house, but I'm at the shop now, and will delete that pic, and add another this evening.

That Star Sapphire is absolutely gorgeous! How did you find it; was the mineral just lying in your yard?

Thanks for the good eye, Breezie

Thanks Breeze. I found it one Spring when preparing a bed for tomatoes :D As you know saphires are not always that 'sparkly' in the rough. Family and friends laughed at me when I showed them the stone and called it a gem stone. Finally I took it with me to a gem hunting spot in Little Switzerland, NC and pulled it out when I was getting the days finds evaluated. I Really need to get a better setting for that gem :sign13:

Breezie, I don't have any fluorite to compare. But here is a pic of a few of the emeralds I have that show decent colors. What mines down there have you tried? I went to Sheffield for a day (that's where I got the emeralds from), however we didn't like the way the people who worked at that mine treated the quest. So we tried Mason's Rubie and Sapphire mine, they treated us like family so we spent the remainder of the trip mining there. I have even returned to Mason's since then. But I haven't had any luck with Jewelers in Va. wanting anything to do with the stones. I have over 300ct. raw weight of rubies and sapphires, and over a thousand of those emeralds. I have 2 rubies and 2 sapphires that I got cut while I was down there but still no luck on selling them. Have you had any luck with the stones from down there or are they mainly for tourist and keepsakes?

Nick, Several years ago, we did some mining in Boone, NC. After that time, we decided to sell 'Gem Bags,' so I order wholesale mixed raw gems to salt the bags. It's really alot of fun.

As far as finding a jewelry store to set your stones, if you will GOOGLE that in Boone, NC, you will find several places. Give them a call, and they can probably give you a guesstimate on the price to have them cut/polished etc. and set. Breezie

Getting them cut and mounted wasn't so much my concern, I have contact info for a cutter down there. I just don't want to spend the money to have them cut when I can't find a jewler or anyone interested in buying them at a price worth paying to have them cut. Unless I pack up all my stones to send to Sri Lanka to have cut at very low cost, I'm just not comfortable with that process. I have basically lost intrest in gems for now, gold has caught my eye. The down side to that is, most of the gold left is out west.

Have never found a stone worth selling, however have got a few stones cut over the years. My favorite cut stone is the star saphire found in my yard :icon_thumright:
That's a nice stone ya got there, what part of Carolina did you find that? Have you ever done any gold prospecting in NC? I read that there are still a few spots down there it can be found.

Nick,

No I haven't made it to Virginia yet, but I have numerous friends that live and prospect in Virginia, the gold belt runs down through the central portion and the entire length of Virginia, you would have to go inland at least 50 miles or more to reach the gold belt from where you live, check out the forum and read up on people prospecting now in Virginia.

There is also a great gold prospecting club in Virginia, CVGP (Central Virginia Gold Prospectors) check them out great people.

LOL

If you want to find a gem you can sell, try diamonds. http://www.craterofdiamondsstatepark.com/digging-for-diamonds/default.aspx
Have you ever been to Crater of Diamonds? I haven't been there but have heard from people who have that the worthwhile diamonds are few and far between. I was told by an older treasure hunter the best time to go there is right after a big storm passes through. I definately want to go there one day though. If you have been there please share info/ pics

A dozen turning the dirt definately sounds like a good time to go. The guy that was telling me to go after a big storm was saying that the heavy rain washes out a lot of the dirt, and the heavier diamonds tend to stay behind making them easier to find. Both ideas make sense to me, just gotta make my way out there after a big storm when they just bulldozed :headbang:

Having a smallish sceen, I hadn't noticed that item at first..
I would call it amber - not red.
Could it be a Garnet?
Ok maybe amber but still a pilot light jewel.
not a pilot jewel it glows under dark light from having metal in it,which they dont put in glass anymore.it maybe the same shape, maybe they coppied the same style.i had taken a different one to a lady that looked at it and she said it was like a trade piece back in the day.
