To my knowledge , even after years in salt water, Gold won't look tarnished like that.
It has a machine made look to it. I would guess no older than 1970's. But I'm just guessing :icon_thumleft:

I believe trikikiwi is right...
Also, if it had been gold the settings for the stones would have been different (holes all the way through)

What did you test this with?

I had a local pawn shop test it. If you look very closely (kind of hard to see), you can see some very small holes where on the inside of the ring where the stones were.

another member here "tentpegs" had a thread a couple of weeks ago:

http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,293752.0.html

One of the rings he found was exceptionally crusty, and it turned out to be 9k gold. 10k gold still only contains 41.7% gold, making 58.3% other "stuff," so I believe the lower karat stuff is more prone to tarnish.

Below are the "before" and "after" pics from his thread:

Cool :icon_thumleft: I look forward to seeing it cleaned up.

BTW - the ring in your avatar looks interesting!

Thanks for you replies Mike! Maybe I'll take it to a local jeweler to see if they can clean it up. I really don't have anything readily available to clean it up. Any suggestions for home cleaning? Brillo Pads aren't too recommended eh?

Thanks for the comment on my avatar ring! Found it this year (well, 2009, things are still frozen in 2010) and it's one of my best finds. Don't think it's all that old as it is stamped "14k." The stones did test to be diamonds - I think the center stone is about 1/4 carat. Thought it was a junk ring until I got it home.
