Went to the local club meeting tonight. One member found this item in a field near where a farmhouse used to be. It was moderately deep-about 5-7" and in the hole by itself, no other signals nearby. Ball appears to be either glass or agate and about the size of a small billard ball.

Any ideas? My 1st impression was maybe part of a lightning rod but ???.

My guess is a portion of an old Victorian weather vane...

Why heck Jeff, I'm surprised at you. You know what that is. It's one of those blue ball and chrome things that is bolted onto that other thing. Not the one with the pull chain, but the other one. Oh, You know what I mean don't you? ::) ;) Monty

Found these two.

They are called Lamp Breaks. These balls are 1 and 1/2 inches

Maybe?

One on top is Onyx and the bottom one marble

Angelo, it's entirely possible. Lamp Breaks are decorative and functional lamp parts, useful in joining the lamp base to the lamp column or the tubing as is often the case with floor lamps.

I was thinking it might have been part of a base foot (no scratching those fine Victorian floors). ???

Monty, oh that thingy. I almost forgot-thanks for refreshing my memory. LOL
