Found in area where most items date to early 1900's. From what I can make it out it says "Made in Japan" then it theres a triangle with an H inside it and under that either says H A R D or 6 A R D or maybe even G A R D and up close it may even have periods between the letters, and then it obviously says whistle underneath. Its pretty heavy also seems like brass. Any help would be great thanks!

Please excuse my tomfoolery. I'm just trying to put things in a slightly different perspective. I sometimes have problems with those humungous pictures. Once in a while I think it helps to see things closer to actual size. But I will say this; that poor little Japanese whistle sure has seen better days.

I wonder if the H stands for the "J Hudson Company" who was one of the world's largest whistle manufactures and who had factories in the U.S. - Germany and Japan? And who later became the Acme Whistle Company and is still in business today and famous for their "Ace Thunderer" whistles?

Its late here in sunny southern California and no time to research this now, but I bet Breezie or someone else has the answer before the sun rises here. By the way, Breezie, I like your "Guard" painting. You should see the one I did trying to squeeze the word "Military" onto the whistle. (Lol)

Hey Big Cy ~

One of the links has some patent numbers. Check'em out.

Here's a couple of links to the Hudson Company. One of them even refers to "Referee" whistles. And if the one in question is a Hudson, then it might be a lot older than I thought.

If this second link doesn't go straight to the inventor, just click on the little blue name when it opens and it will.

Its 8:30 AM here on the west coast and I have been researching the "J Hudson Co." for about an hour ... but without success connecting the "H/Diamond" logo to that company. I also checked the patent numbers I mentioned, but they must be foreign as none of them match U.S. patents. :dontknow:

So unless someone has already done so, I'm going to take creskol's advice and contact the Whistle Museum. However, if someone has already done this, please let me know so as not to send duplicate inquiries. I will wait until around noon Pacific Time before emailing the museum and will let everyone know if/when I do.

In the meantime, here are a couple of things I did find that may be of interest. The first link refers to a Japanese logo described as "KK in a Diamond." With so much corrosion on the whistle, I am beginning to think the various letters and marks could be almost anything.

The second link refers to marks on certain whistles, and that some of them used an "H" to indicated "Hospital." And an "A" for "Asylum," which is where I'm going to admit myself if we don't solve this thing soon.

Except for possibly contacting the Whistle Museum later, I'm calling it quits because this thing has me stumped. We knew it was a whistle from page one, but made by who and when is still the $64.00 question ... with my 2-cents worth not amounting to very much so far.

Again, please let me know if someone has already contacted the Museum.

Thanks.

The under-strengthening is typical to Chinese and Japanese ones. It would need a closer look. My guess is late 40s Japan U.S Zone to early 1950's Japan made by a firm that later used KK in diamond logo in very similar but cheaper models, and a hump back top loop.

When the final letter in a set of intials on a whistle is A it usually stands for Asylum and H for Hospital. :tongue3:

I haven't contacted them, as I was leaving that option open for "metaldetectingtaylor" to investigate.

creskol ~

Thanks.

I'll hold off until tomorrow before contacting the museum. That should give MDT plenty of time to respond.

Big Cy ~

As I hinted at earlier, the whistle is so deterioated that I'm beginning to think the "H" might even be the <KK> Japanese mark that I read about. I know this sounds weird, but try to visualize two little Vs on either side of the H something like this ... >H< (with one of the Ks being reversed).

I'm also thinking it might have been (but the j and co. rusted away) something like the following for the "J Hudson Company" ... < j H co >

Confusing to say the least! :dontknow:

MDT ~

I just assumed there was an email contact for the museum. But when I just now checked I couldn't find one either. Maybe someone else can figure it out without having to join the site.

... and no stress here either. That went away when my San Diego Chargers didn't get into the playoffs. Now its ... "Go Denver Broncos!" (I gotta root for someone). :icon_thumleft:

Later.

It turns out that I didn't have to go through Facebook to send my inquiry. I got to looking around on the Whistle Museum website again, and on the left side there is a box that says "Syndicate." And below that is a "Post Atom 1.0" When I clicked on the "Post" part and scrolled down a little ways, I found the following ...

Whistle Museum Link:
http://whistlemuseum.com/2011/11/19...ed-siren-whistles-for-cane-top-and-more-.aspx

To be cont,

Thanks for visiting.
The museum is getting close to an average of 1000 visits a day .
And I am happy to answer questions and comments. You may email

[email protected]

I sent the my inquiry (with a picture of the whistle mouth piece) to the email address shown above. I will let you know if/when I hear back from them.

I just received the following message. I'm working on it now to save and send metaldetectingtay's other pictures to Avner. I'm not sure how long all of this will take, but I will be back just as soon as I hear from Avner again. :icon_thumleft:

Hi Bob

Very interesting. Can you send a full picture of the whole piece and the sides ?

Thanks
