Haven't been able to get out and hunt lately so I decided to hunt a local antique store and bought this 1883 shield nickel for $4.95 did I waste my money? I would say it's in VG8 condition...

If it was something you liked and wanted, then it was not a waste of money.

Doesn't matter, you like it, you bought it. Heck, you'll continue to amass many many coins. It's not like you won't offset the cost many times over.

Funny thing is, I bought a worn out Barber half just to have one, and not too long after that, I found a Seated half. Woo Hoo. I always like my foundlings better than store bought.

Same. I've owned many a Walking Lib half, but never saved any until I dug one.

1883 Shield nickel, Very Good detail, Red Books at $22 and eBays between $5-$10. I probably would have bought it myself.

BHG , Hey - you did OK - in Good condition 2013 Redbook shows $20.00 and if you needed this for a U.S. "type" coin collection
you did fine - a lot of people spend that much on a latte at Starbucks !

now you own a piece of history, probably not many people you know who can say that. congratulations, or it couldve bought you a starbucks coffee lol.

Yep, you wasted your bucks. I feel so badly for you, I will give you your money back for it:tongue3:. Really, I think you made a good buy. I definitely would have bought it too!

anything is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it, regardless of what a book or website says. if you willingly gave the price you paid, then of course you got your money's worth. enjoy your new addition to your collection.

Its not going to be worth anything less that $20, like people said. At that its a good deal !!

Keep @ it and HH !! :hello2:

Thanks everyone for your comments. It is my favorite nickel design so definitely worth the rolls of cents I found detecting... so it wad kinda free ;-)
