Not really a GS score, I made this deal through CL, but I consider this part of my GS circuit.

Bought 2 pieces from a nice woman for $150, they were passed on to her from her mother. She was clearing out some stuff on CL.

I've done some basic research and know I did pretty well, but I am unclear on exact details, so would love some help!

The ladle is Swedish and based on some research on the internet I think it is from he late 1880s. Makers marks are GAB, three crowns, some masked character and I believe Z5. Z5 makes the piece made in 1878 and the crowns mean sterling silver I'm pretty sure. The only mark I could not find was the masked dude so I'm unsure of whether it has value over scrap. Weighs about 220g.

The center piece is a beauty! It is marked sterling and I believe from Birmingham England, and I believe dates to the mid 1850s but I'm unclear of an exact maker/designer. Weighs 980g!!! Any help IDing the maker of this piece would be greatly appreciated!

Not bad for a 20 minute deal!

Thats the trademark of Gorham a US company not a British hallmark.

Check out this link

Almost $700 melt so you did well on the 2 items.

The Gorham piece is from 1915. I know drbecker didn't suggest it, he was merely giving a minimum value price, but please do not even consider scrapping these pieces. They are worth more than that. Welcome to the garage sale forum by the way in case I didn't mention it on your matchbox thread.

Good score! I've got a couple of Swedish silver cups I found for a good deal because the antique dealer must have thought they weren't solid silver being the word sterling wasn't there on them. Get familiar with those world silver marks and you'll only improve on finding those over looked treasures out there.

Ah! Those nice ladies who are clearing out stuff. Sounds like you found yourself a good gal?

Thanks for the great info and warm welcome. I have been taking stuff to an estate jeweler and he is very honest and enjoys quality pieces like this. I may have him check it out and see if he's interested

Any other tips on reselling?

I've stalked these forums long enough, I figured it was time to get involved!

Here's a similar one that sold on eBay. Others someone is asking 12,000 and another one 28, 000 for one like yours! Just to let ya know! Nice finds!! Did you ask if she had anything else? I'm guessing yes.

Have to remember the stamp act of 1906 for precious metal goods.Silver pieces made after 1906 had to be stamped Sterling or 925/1000.

National Stamping Act 1906 - 925-1000.com
Not true. All that means is that anything that does bear the words Sterling or .925 has to meet those minimum requirements. That's all. There is plenty of unmarked sterling out there made by Native American Artists and others as well. Not to mention the foreign stuff.

Thanks Diggummup for setting him stright on what that means,I was sure getting tired of that always showing up.

Thanks for all the responses...I saw the listed prices for some of these pieces but very little sold anywhere near the high end prices. Not sure really what to do with this piece, maybe the antique society?

As a side note, she said the gorham was sold already as I was there to see the ladle and another piece that ended up to be alpaca I think. She said it was sold for $75 and was meeting the guys in an hour, I offered her a hundred for it right then and there...glad I did!

Also of course I asked what else she had and she sent me pics of this watch. Any thought on what I should offer for this piece without knowing weight?

Loving the feedback, thanks for the time guys!

This one is also non working and she is asking $350 firm. No budging, I've asked...thought about offering $200 but second guessing.

The sword is the date mark for 1915. Here ya go- Gorham Silver Marks & Dates - Encyclopedia of Silver Marks, Hallmarks & Makers' Marks
The melt value is somewhere just south of $600 at today's prices. I think $1000-$1200 is a realistic selling price. Maybe $1495.00 with a best offer option at most.

Update: Sold the center piece for $800 cash and two MS 63 Morgans. Maybe coulda held out for more but I'm happy!

Thanks for everyone's help!

Okay, you got the Morgans. I thought for a minute you got $800 for the bowl and two Morgans. That's cool for a quick flip. Equals out close to a grand.

Ya about $900 value. $800 cash and trade for the two Morgans. I can't complain!

Cash will go to my World Cup 2018 fund and sons college account!!
