Hey Guys,

I went to the thrift store today with my girlfriend and I managed to stumble upon something that caught my eye. Initially I thought it could have been silver plated or a bed warmer, but perhaps since I only paid $1.50 it's probably just mid 20th century junk...let me know of you have any ideas. Thanks!

I think it's a decorative piece, judging by the hallmark (Italy) perhaps chrome or nickel plating. The design is based on the old bed warmers tho, IMO

Google butlers ashtray

Thanks, I'm thinking that's exactly what it is. In addition, this type of metal it has does not stick to a magnet / is not magnetic, however there is no numbering stamped on the piece. There is however a crown, some cursive, and ITALY stamped on the back (shown in the original post, top right picture) Could it still be silver?

I would say no. But Im not always right. My best guess would be chrome nickle plated brass like your plumbing fixtures or even stainless but not silver.

If you google bed warmer, you see some really neat ones. I would think it would be marked if it was silver or even silver plated. Maybe a pawn shop could tell you? You dont have to sell it to them.

I looked at your pics again and the one of the handle, at the flange where it attaches "to the whatcha ma call it" lol seems to have tarnish similar to silver, I wonder if they would have made such a piece in silver plate with no markings of such..........

I showed my girlfriend the exact same tarnish spots last night and she agreed it could be silver played. The metal also feels "soft" and again is not magnetic. However you are right I strongly believed that they would even stamp for silver plate, but think about it, if it's just plated and the content was considered so low at the time, maybe they didn't even bother with considering stamping it plated or considering a content level?

Also, any clue to the time? I'm assuming pretty modern maybe 1960's/70's based on the wood handle?

If its only plated, it might as well be stainless. To try and extract the silver is not worth it, as far as I know.

The value is whatever the item is worth.
