I spent half an hour breaking my back digging this damn thing up last night by flashlight while being bitten by mosquitoes in my back yard. It was buried about 8" deep. It is an angled channel made of heavy copper and has a couple of pieces of heavy copper wire crimped into it. It looks like it was cut out of a larger assembly. I would guess that it is either electricity-related or antenna-related. There is no visible printing on it. So what is it?

A few yards away, I found a 1964 penny to compensate me for my efforts.

Thanks! You nailed it. Here's how it's used.

Mine appears to be made of copper. I haven't put a magnet to it. I guess nowadays they're made of aluminum or stainless steel.

I noticed that your question has been answered, but I still wanted to respond to tell you that I like your style. That is what it takes to be successful in this hobby.

Thank you, plehbah. I am hoping that my backyard skills pay off in the near future when I apply them to more promising sites.
