I've posted once or twice about the metal detecting classes I'm giving at one of the YMCA camps near me but I just had to post again after the ones I gave this week. Let me tell you, I'm having a blast doing this. This week I had a class of about 12 kids, ages 6-10. A couple of them have been there the last couple weeks and they always get pretty excited when they see I'm there to give a class. Anyway, this week I took a bunch of my old wheat pennies, a silver dollar, a half dollar and a Susan B Anthony dollar and I hid them in a woodchip covered clearing and let them take turns finding coins. You should have seen the girl who found the silver dollar. I've never seen anyone so excited! She was thrilled! The best part of the day though was this little 6 year old girl. She was crying because she couldn't lift the detector and was upset because she wouldn't be able to find anything. I took her aside and told her she could help me use my detector(the DFX which I don't let any of the other kids touch) and together we found one of the old wheat pennies I had hidden. She was so happy and proud that she had found an old penny(Not to mention it was the oldest one of the bunch).
I tell you, I haven't been out to detect for myself in about 3 weeks but I've had more fun and have gotten more enjoyment out of seeing these kids having a great time, then I've had on all my hunts combined this past year. When that girl went from crying and upset that she couldn't carry and work a detector, to being happy and excited because she found dug up an old penny, it was an incredible experience. Wait until I hide some IH pennies next week :-)
