Today dawned bright and sunny, so after yesterday’s sweaty swing, I elected to traverse the river bank where there would be some shade, could not persuade himself to get in the River… but we had a great time nonetheless! Xx


A Beautiful but crushed thimble, clack valve weight (?) 2 fishing weights (?), musket ball, 2 Livery buttons, both Manners/Peacocks, minic triangle toy key (1950s) more buttons, a few unknown bits with a neat lead roll, a cow ear tag, 2 penny’s 1873 and 1935, a gorgeous 1920 shilling and a 1921 French franc!

And as ever a couple of pics to show you where we played! xx

Ahhh.
The water will chill beverages in stone jars as easy as ever.
You might find evidence here on hot days of others who have stolon away to the beckoning shade for a quick foot soak , and a check on the butter staying cool. Oh but you two already did.
(No , that's not my finger mark in the butter...)

Someone sewing needlework for pleasure in the shade or soaking in the cool water on a hot day dropped a thimble?
Or more mundanely merely mending laundry /a garment being washed?
And since it's cool and inviting in the picture there there's time to ask , did any of those coins fall out of being washed clothing? l.o.l..

Here is the old map (1888) with LiDAR to show you a bit more, we were there was a weir across the stream (red line ) where I took the photo with the tree, have also put a purple blob where himself lives, you can also see the ridge and furrow still in some bits near the river…. xx

Oh! Lots of potential visitors per that map to the water during historic heat events.

(Just laboring afield ; the draw to the water at teatime or after work for a dunking would be hard to resist. Beasts of burden needing to be watered , or not.)

A neighbor couple in my youth with no children would host English lads for a week or two in summer.
I'd be tasked with taking them fishing for a day , or two.
Europe was then as had evolved quite strict about killing fish in public waters by the masses.
To eat select fish from our catches really impressed upon them.

Small fish were (are) the target of European tournaments commonly.
Be that , fish are fish to the hungry.
Getting caught around a weir without permission would be trouble.
Getting caught checking a "bank line" (baited hook and line held in position by a lead weight secured to a branch or just an anchor) would be trouble too.
But a weir is easier to watch up close than an entire stream! More so in the dark long ago.
Good stout linen thread belongs in a sewing kit.
Beeswaxed as it could and should be , it can soak a while unattended and perhaps encounter a fish!
Could be why some of your lead recoveries occurred.
the slip sinker (oblong round with hole through it) and a couple lead weights eyed at top are suspicious. ( " Bank" sinkers have a different definition that what I call bank fishing , but the two can cross paths.. Confused yet? l.o.l..)
You may have another plummet too.
And some modern fisherfolk in Europe still use a plummet. Not only to check depth to adjust thier line and thus presentation , but to sample the bottom material with as well. (Fussy folk aye? )
But the competition for even small fish is nothing new.
And adaptation to catch them has been a long process.
Even if a lead weighted /tethered hook on a linin thread tied to a just supple enough limb overnight and checked before daylight came into play for a hungry peasant. Or two!

Pretty sure it is silver. You only had that or copper-alloy or aluminium (& its not the latter)
